How much is a property tax exemption worth in Osage County?
The rate shown is the county's effective property tax rate - aggregate taxes actually paid divided by aggregate home value, from the Census ACS 2023 five-year file. Every overlapping levy, credit and cap is already inside it, which makes it the honest basis for sizing an exemption's dollar value.
These are example savings for a typical home in this county, not an estimate of your own bill. Your actual saving depends on your assessed value, your taxing districts, and how this exemption interacts with any others you hold.
| Effective rate | what homeowners here actually paid |
|---|---|
| Basis | ACS 2023 five-year aggregates |
| The full fair cash value of the homestead (Okla. Const. art. 10, §8E) | about $0 a year against the county rate |
| Total exemption (Okla. Const. art. 10, §8E) | the entire bill — about $1,850 a year against the county rate on a typical $250,000 value, and more once your other taxing units are added |
| Where to file | Osage County County assessor |
| Deadline | March 15, every year |

Vehicle Excise Tax Off One Car Every Three Years — and the Clock Resets on a Write-Off
A veteran certified by the VA as receiving compensation AT THE 100% RATE for a permanent disability sustained through military action, accident or in-service disease pays no Oklahoma vehicle excise tax on ONE VEHICLE IN ANY CONSECUTIVE THREE-YEAR PERIOD. The exception worth knowing is that THE THREE-YEAR LIMIT IS WAIVED where you are replacing a vehicle the insurer has declared a total loss — so a write-off does not cost you the exemption for the rest of the cycle. Your name must be on the title, and Veterans Registry enrolment is used for verification.
Full vehicle excise tax exemption on one vehicle in three years
DAV Plates at 50% — Two Vehicles
At a 50% service-connected certification, Disabled American Veteran plates go on up to TWO vehicles — renewable at any Service Oklahoma location.

Four Gold Star Plates — $27.10 to Issue, $22.16 to Renew
Gold Star Family, Gold Star Parent, Gold Star Spouse and Gold Star Survivor are four separate plates, each honouring the family of an honorably discharged veteran who died due to or as a consequence of a service-connected injury, illness or disease. Each is priced at $27.10 for the original and $22.16 at renewal. None of them is free.
$27.10 original, $22.16 renewal — for each of the four Gold Star plates
A Surviving Spouse Registers One Vehicle at the Disabled Veteran Rate
The disabled veteran registration rate is $5 plus insurance and mailing fees. It cannot be done online — the discounted rate is unavailable through online renewal.

The Placard Comes First — You Cannot Get the Disabled Plate Without It
The order is fixed and it surprises people: a disability placard is required in order to apply for a physically disabled licence plate. Six kinds of practitioner may sign the certification, not only a physician, and the agency asks for twenty business days before chasing.
A disability placard, which is the precondition for the physically disabled plate

Military Retirement Pay Is Now 100% Exempt — the Old Figures Are Wrong
From tax year 2022 Oklahoma exempts 100% of military retirement benefits from state income tax. THE PREVIOUS RULE WAS THE GREATER OF 75% OF BENEFITS OR $10,000, and that older figure is still circulating in guides, tax software prompts and advice written before the change. If a source tells you Oklahoma exempts 75%, it is out of date. There is no age test and no disability requirement — receiving U.S. Armed Forces retirement benefits as an Oklahoma resident is the whole qualification.
100% of military retirement benefits exempt from Oklahoma income tax
Sales Tax Exemption Card — $25,000 a Year
The same 100% certification exempts up to $25,000 of purchases a year from state sales tax — no other state in this corpus does this.

Women Veterans Program — a Statutory Coordinator, Not a Courtesy Desk
Statute requires the state veterans department to run a Women Veterans Program housed in the Executive Director’s own office, to designate a women veterans coordinator for the state, and to report to the Governor and Legislature every even-numbered year on the number of women veterans and the problems they face.
A named state coordinator, outreach, needs assessment and application guidance
PTSD as a Mitigating Factor at Sentencing — What the Court May Consider
A court making a sentencing decision about a veteran may consider as a mitigating factor that the person has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder resulting from military service. The section sets out exactly two documents the defendant must produce, and one of them is a certification of combat-zone service.
A mitigating factor the court may consider — discretionary, not a reduction

POW and MIA Tuition Waived — for the Veteran and for the Child
Oklahoma waives tuition in full — RESIDENT OR NONRESIDENT — at its state-supported institutions for a person declared a prisoner of war or missing in action by the Secretary of Defense, and for their child under 24. The residency test looks backwards: OKLAHOMA RESIDENCE ON ENTERING THE ARMED FORCES, or an official residence in Oklahoma. The nonresident half is what makes this unusual — most tuition waivers reduce you to the resident rate, and this one covers the nonresident rate too.
Full tuition waived — resident or nonresident — at state-supported institutions
Heroes Promise — Tuition for Children of the Fallen
A tuition scholarship for the child of a person killed in the line of duty in any branch of the U.S. Armed Forces after 1 January 2000, or who died after that date from a line-of-duty injury — paying tuition at public colleges and universities, for up to five years or a bachelor's degree.

No State Military Lease-Termination Right — the Federal Act Is the Whole Route
The state landlord and tenant title contains no provision letting a tenant end a lease on military orders. Read end to end, Title 41 does not use the words military, armed forces, National Guard, active duty or deployment anywhere.
No state termination right — use the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act
Special Housing Grant — Up to $5,000 on Top of the Federal Adapted Housing Grant
A state grant of up to $5,000 toward the costs the federal Specially Adapted Housing grant does not bear. It requires approval for the federal grant first, residency in the state before you entered active service, and residence here when the federal grant is approved and when the state grant is applied for and received.
Up to $5,000, once, toward costs the federal grant does not cover

Veterans Registry — the Gate to the Licence Indicator and the Sales Tax Card
Enrolling in the state veterans registry lets the veterans department verify eligibility for state benefits, and is what puts the veteran indicator on a driver licence or identification card. Since 1 November 2021 it is also a precondition for the sales tax exemption.

Common questions about Osage County veteran benefits
- What can I claim here?
- The Oklahoma statewide records apply in every county. We have not researched county-level programmes here, so this page shows state law and complete geography rather than a local layer.
- What is it worth in this county?
- Dollar figures use the county's EFFECTIVE property tax rate - what homeowners there actually paid per dollar of home value, from the Census ACS 2023 five-year file. It is an estimate for sizing a saving; the levy table on your own bill governs.
- Where do I file for a veteran property tax exemption in Osage County?
- File with your County assessor. The form and deadline are on each benefit record.
- What document does the Osage County County assessor accept as proof?
- The statute sets what must be proved. An office may tell you which document it prefers, but it may not add a requirement the statute does not contain. We have not researched per-county document quirks in Oklahoma.
