Enrolling in the state veterans registry lets the veterans department verify eligibility for state benefits, and is what puts the veteran indicator on a driver licence or identification card. Since 1 November 2021 it is also a precondition for the sales tax exemption.

How to claim it

  1. 1Register first, then apply for the benefit. The registry is the verification layer underneath the state benefits, and applying without it is what causes the delay.
  2. 2Send a discharge document that shows your name, the active-duty dates and the characterisation of service — the department names the DD Form 214 member 4 copy and the NGB Form 22.
  3. 3If you already hold the sales tax exemption from before 1 November 2021, register anyway. The department states registration is needed to keep it.
  4. 4Ask for the veteran indicator at the licence counter after you are in the registry, not before. The order matters.
  5. 5Guard and Reserve members who are residents are described as eligible for the indicator alongside those with active-duty service.
  6. 6The department’s registry line is the place to chase a stalled enrolment; a county veterans service officer can also file it with you.
