Veterans Registry — the Gate to the Licence Indicator and the Sales Tax Card
Enrolling in the state veterans registry lets the veterans department verify eligibility for state benefits, and is what puts the veteran indicator on a driver licence or identification card. Since 1 November 2021 it is also a precondition for the sales tax exemption.

What this benefit is
Enrolling in the state veterans registry lets the veterans department verify eligibility for state benefits, and is what puts the veteran indicator on a driver licence or identification card. Since 1 November 2021 it is also a precondition for the sales tax exemption.
What it's worth: Verified veteran status, and the indicator on a licence or ID card
- The department describes the registry as voluntary, and as the way it verifies eligibility for state benefits.
- Enrolment is the precondition for the veteran indicator on a driver licence or state identification card.
- The department states that from 1 November 2021 an applicant for the sales tax exemption based on a 100 percent service-connected rating must be registered, and that a veteran awarded the exemption before that date must register to keep it.
- The qualifying characterisations described are honorable and general (under honorable conditions).
Who is entitled to it
- The registry records the veteran’s own service.
- Your discharge is within the range the indicator is issued for.
- Your home is in Oklahoma.
Not sure whether that describes you?
Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.
How to claim it
- 1Register first, then apply for the benefit. The registry is the verification layer underneath the state benefits, and applying without it is what causes the delay.
- 2Send a discharge document that shows your name, the active-duty dates and the characterisation of service — the department names the DD Form 214 member 4 copy and the NGB Form 22.
- 3If you already hold the sales tax exemption from before 1 November 2021, register anyway. The department states registration is needed to keep it.
- 4Ask for the veteran indicator at the licence counter after you are in the registry, not before. The order matters.
- 5Guard and Reserve members who are residents are described as eligible for the indicator alongside those with active-duty service.
- 6The department’s registry line is the place to chase a stalled enrolment; a county veterans service officer can also file it with you.

Why only one source type: The registry is run by the veterans department and described on its own page. The bill behind the 2021 requirement was not opened this session, so the date is carried as the department states it.
