How to claim it

  1. 1Confirm the service test first: at least 90 days served with one or more of those days on active duty — or a discharge for a service-connected disability, which removes the 90-day requirement.
  2. 2Get certified by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for receipt of per diem payment. ODVA treats that federal certification as the gate, so start it before anything else.
  3. 3Have the medical need documented — the centre must find the applicant disabled by age, disease or other reason and in need of the care the centre is licensed to give.
  4. 4Ask where you sit in the admission priority. ODVA places World War II veterans first, then ex-prisoners of war, then wartime veterans grouped by service-connected rating, then other eligible veterans.

CorrectionSpouses and surviving spouses are admitted only "on exhaustion of placement of all eligible Veterans" — that is, after every eligible veteran on the list has a bed. A couple planning to move in together should ask about the current position of that list rather than assume joint admission.
Worth knowingThe 90-day service test has an exception that is easy to miss: a veteran discharged because of a service-connected disability does not need the 90 days.
