What this benefit is

One of five options under the state Agriculture Enhancement and Diversification Program, open to a veteran creating or expanding a farming or ranching operation. Grants come in three levels to a $10,000 ceiling with rising match requirements; anything above $10,000 is treated as a 0% interest loan.

What it's worth: Grants to $10,000 in three match bands, or a 0% interest loan above that

  • The department publishes the option as "Veteran or Young Farmer Grant or Loan", for a veteran or a young farmer aged 45 or younger engaged in the creation or expansion of an agricultural farming or ranching operation or business.
  • Grants are available in three levels not to exceed $10,000.
  • A grant of $2,500 or less requires no matching funds.
  • A grant of $2,501 to $5,000 requires a 25% cash or in-kind match.
  • A grant of $5,001 to $10,000 requires a dollar-for-dollar cash match.
  • Any application for more than $10,000 is considered as a loan, and the programme provides funds in the form of grants or 0% interest loans.
  • Applicants to the programme must be at least 21 years of age and a legal resident of the state.
  • Submission deadlines are 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October, or the next regular business day if the department is closed on the deadline date.
  • Proposals must clearly demonstrate the ability to directly benefit the state’s farmers and ranchers through the creation of new revenue streams.

Who is entitled to it

  • The veteran route is written around the veteran running the operation.
  • You served in the armed forces — that is the veteran route into this option.
  • Your home is in Oklahoma.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

Deadline: 1 January, 1 April, 1 July and 1 October
  1. 1Pick the grant band before you write anything. The three bands carry different match burdens, and asking for $5,001 instead of $5,000 turns a 25% match into a dollar-for-dollar one.
  2. 2Build the business plan the department asks for: a minimum of five years of projected productivity and income, and new and innovative plans for marketing the products.
  3. 3Line up an adviser early. The department requires advisers to be professionals in the field relating to the project and willing to assist in fulfilling the project goals.
  4. 4Show the state-level benefit. Proposals must demonstrate a direct benefit to the state’s farmers and ranchers through new revenue streams, not just to your own operation.
  5. 5Diary the next quarterly deadline — there are four a year, so a missed one costs three months, not a year.
  6. 6If the project is bigger than $10,000, come at it as a loan proposal rather than trimming the project. The programme lends at 0% interest.
  7. 7The veteran route and the young-farmer route are alternatives. A veteran over 45 still qualifies on the veteran limb.

Worth knowingNothing published on the programme page requires a particular discharge characterisation, or any minimum service. It says "veteran" and leaves it there — which is looser than most state veteran preferences and worth not talking yourself out of.
CorrectionThe state veterans department’s own farming page points at a national coalition and a chapter that is reorganising. That is a membership network, not money. The funding is at the agriculture department, under a different name, and the two pages do not link to each other.
Known gapNo statute or administrative rule behind the programme was read this session, so the terms are carried as the department publishes them and could move between funding rounds. Nothing read establishes how many veteran applications are funded, or the scoring.
