Vehicle Excise Tax Off One Car Every Three Years — and the Clock Resets on a Write-Off

A veteran certified by the VA as receiving compensation AT THE 100% RATE for a permanent disability sustained through military action, accident or in-service disease pays no Oklahoma vehicle excise tax on ONE VEHICLE IN ANY CONSECUTIVE THREE-YEAR PERIOD. The exception worth knowing is that THE THREE-YEAR LIMIT IS WAIVED where you are replacing a vehicle the insurer has declared a total loss — so a write-off does not cost you the exemption for the rest of the cycle. Your name must be on the title, and Veterans Registry enrolment is used for verification.

What it's worth: Full vehicle excise tax exemption on one vehicle in three years

  • THE THREE-YEAR LIMIT IS WAIVED when replacing a vehicle the insurer has DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS.
  • Requires VA certification of compensation AT THE 100% RATE for a permanent disability sustained through military action, accident or in-service disease.
  • Honorable discharge from active service in any branch, or from the Oklahoma National Guard.
  • THE VETERAN'S NAME MUST APPEAR ON THE VEHICLE TITLE.
  • VETERANS REGISTRY ENROLMENT is used for verification — enrol before you buy.
  • The saving is the excise tax, which scales with the purchase price.

How to claim it

Deadline: One vehicle per three years; waived after a total loss
  1. 1Enrol in the Oklahoma Veterans Registry BEFORE you buy. Verification runs through it.
  2. 2Make sure the vehicle is titled in your name — a spouse-only title loses the exemption.
  3. 3Claim at titling with Service Oklahoma, not afterwards.
  4. 4Diary the three-year cycle so you know when the next exemption is available.
  5. 5If a vehicle is written off, say so — the three-year limit is waived on a replacement.
