What this benefit is

A state grant of up to $5,000 toward the costs the federal Specially Adapted Housing grant does not bear. It requires approval for the federal grant first, residency in the state before you entered active service, and residence here when the federal grant is approved and when the state grant is applied for and received.

What it's worth: Up to $5,000, once, toward costs the federal grant does not cover

  • The section caps the grant at Five Thousand Dollars ($5,000.00) per veteran and makes it available subject to the availability of funds.
  • Approval under the federal Specially Adapted Housing programme is a precondition, not an alternative.
  • The state may never pay a share greater than the federal government toward the purchase or remodelling of the home.
  • The grant is made only once to a veteran.
  • Payment is not made to the veteran directly — it is disbursed in the care of the federal regional office to be placed in escrow, and released only when the federal side is ready to complete the escrow agreement.
  • Each award is paid from the Oklahoma Veteran Housing Program Revolving Fund to the extent funds are available.

Who is entitled to it

  • The grant is made to the disabled veteran.
  • You served in the armed forces.
  • Your home is in Oklahoma.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

Deadline: After the federal adapted-housing grant is approved, while you are living in the state
  1. 1Get the federal Specially Adapted Housing approval first. Without it the state application has nothing to sit behind.
  2. 2Check the residency test before you spend time on the form: the section asks that you were a resident of the state BEFORE entering active service with the armed forces. This is the condition that disqualifies people who moved here afterwards.
  3. 3Be physically residing in the state at three separate moments — when the federal grant is approved, when you apply for the state grant, and when you receive it.
  4. 4Say plainly on the application that the home is for permanent, not temporary, residency here, and that the home being bought or remodelled is in the state. Both are express conditions.
  5. 5Do not expect a cheque. The money goes to the federal regional office to be held in escrow and released with the federal grant.
  6. 6Apply even if you have already used up your federal adapted-housing entitlement — subsection F expressly allows it.
  7. 7Ask what is left in the Oklahoma Veteran Housing Program Revolving Fund before you plan around the money. The whole programme is expressed as subject to the availability of funds.
  8. 8A county veterans service officer can file this with you and will know the current form.

No renewal
Once granted it does not need renewing.
Worth knowingThe cap on the state share is doubled up. It is $5,000, and it is also never more than the federal government pays. On a small federal award the state figure comes down with it.
CorrectionThis is easy to mistake for a home-purchase grant. It is not. The section describes bearing costs not borne by the federal government for a specifically designed home — the adapted-housing route, not an ordinary mortgage.
Known gapThe section does not name the form, and no application form was opened this session. Nor does anything read this session say what the revolving fund currently holds, which matters because the whole grant is conditioned on available funds.
