How much is a property tax exemption worth in Brevard County?
Brevard County levies 8.9121 mills county-wide for 2025, published by the Florida Department of Revenue. Every parcel in the county pays at least this. Inside a city or an MSTU the aggregate reaches 13.7669 mills, so your real saving is larger than the figures below.
These are example savings for a typical home in this county, not an estimate of your own bill. Your actual saving depends on your assessed value, your taxing districts, and how this exemption interacts with any others you hold.
| County-wide rate | 8.9121 mills (2025) |
|---|---|
| Rate including city and MSTU levies | up to 13.7669 mills |
| $5,000 exemption (Fla. Stat. §196.24) | about $45 a year against the county rate |
| Total exemption (§196.081) | the entire bill — about $2,228 a year against the county rate on a typical $250,000 value, and more once your other taxing units are added |

The Military Gold Sportsman's Licence — $20 Instead of $100, But Not for Every Veteran
A Florida resident who is an ACTIVE or RETIRED member of the armed forces, reserves, National Guard, Coast Guard or Coast Guard Reserve buys the Gold Sportsman's Licence for $20 instead of $100. It carries the full bundle: hunting, freshwater and saltwater fishing, plus deer, wildlife management area, archery, muzzleloading, crossbow, turkey, waterfowl, snook and lobster permits. Read the eligibility carefully — this is active or RETIRED military, not veterans generally, and a current military ID is required.

Hunt and Fish Without a Licence While Home on Leave
A Florida-resident member of the armed forces who is NOT stationed in Florida and is home on leave for 30 days or less needs no hunting, freshwater fishing or saltwater fishing licence for the leave period. Submit your orders and that is the whole of it.
No licence needed for a leave period of 30 days or less
No Licence Needed at an Approved Veteran Outdoor Rehabilitation Event
At an outdoor recreational event permitted by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission for rehabilitation or enjoyment, a veteran with ANY service-connected disability rating — and active or reserve duty servicemembers — needs no hunting or fishing licence or permit for the duration of the event. The permit is held by the event organiser, so this is not something you claim yourself.
No licence or permit needed during an approved event
Operation Outdoor Freedom — No-Cost Hunts and Outdoor Events
The Florida Forest Service runs no-cost hunts and outdoor recreation events in state forests and on public and private land for Florida-resident honorably discharged veterans certified at least 30% permanently service-connected disabled, and for Military Order of the Purple Heart recipients. Active duty members with service-connected injuries are covered too. It is donation-funded through the Friends of Florida State Forests account.

Free Hunting, Freshwater and Saltwater Licences — Issued for Five Years

File Your Homestead Exemption From Deployment — Next of Kin Can Do It
Fla. Stat. 196.071 lets a member of the armed forces who is eligible for the homestead exemption but cannot file in person because of service have the application made by next of kin, or by someone with written authorisation. It preserves the 1 March filing date for someone who is not in the country to meet it.

The homestead exemption — and everything stacked on it — survives the rental.

A Subsidy Paid to the Person Doing the Caring — With No Veteran Route Into It
Home Care for the Elderly pays a subsidy to the person providing a full-time family-type living arrangement in a private home for up to three elderly people, plus payments for medical, pharmaceutical and dental costs not covered by Medicare, Medicaid or insurance, and special supplements where needed. It is one of very few places where this state pays the caregiver rather than a provider. Eligibility is set to criteria substantially similar to Medicaid nursing home eligibility, and nothing in it turns on military service.
A subsidy to the caregiver, set on a departmental schedule and on the cared-for person's finances
Respite and Adult Day Care Exist — Service Does Not Move You Up the List
The Alzheimer's Disease Initiative funds model day care and respite care programmes alongside fifteen named memory disorder clinics, and the chapter as a whole declares an intent to support families and other caregivers. What it does not do anywhere is mention military service. A veteran caring for a spouse, or a spouse caring for a veteran, applies through the area agency on aging on exactly the same footing as everyone else in the queue.
Respite and day care exist statewide — with no veteran priority and no veteran route

Fla. Stat. 1003.4286 awards a standard Florida high school diploma to an honorably discharged veteran who has not completed high school graduation requirements. Unlike every other state's version of this benefit, there is NO war-era restriction in the statute — it does not matter when you served.

Tuition Deferment While You Wait for the GI Bill to Pay
Fla. Stat. 1009.27 gives any student using benefits under 38 U.S.C. chapters 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 or 35, or 10 U.S.C. chapter 106, one fee deferment each academic year — plus a further deferment every time the benefit payment is delayed by something outside their control. This DEFERS the fees; it does not waive them. The money is still owed.
One fee deferment an academic year, plus one for every delayed payment
In-State Tuition While Stationed Outside Florida
Fla. Stat. 1009.26 waives the out-of-state fee at Florida public institutions for active duty members of the armed forces who are residing or stationed OUTSIDE Florida. It is the mirror image of the usual rule: normally being away costs you residency, and here it does not.

Common questions about Brevard County veteran benefits
- What veteran benefits are available in Brevard County, Florida?
- 60 verified benefits apply in Brevard County: 57 Florida statewide benefits that apply in all 67 counties. They include property tax exemptions, tuition and fee waivers, free licence plates, a free hunting and fishing licence at a 50% rating, and permit fee waivers for home accessibility work.
- How much is the Florida disabled veteran property tax exemption worth in Brevard County?
- Brevard County levies 8.9121 mills county-wide for 2025. For a typical home, the $5,000 exemption under Fla. Stat. §196.24 is therefore worth about $45 a year here. The full exemption under §196.081 removes your entire ad valorem bill — roughly $2,228 a year for a typical $250,000 taxable value. If your home is inside a city the rate is higher, so your saving is larger.
- Where do I file for a veteran property tax exemption in Brevard County?
- With the Brevard County Property Appraiser, on Form DR-501, before March 1. If your VA letter has not arrived yet, file anyway — Florida statute preserves your original application date and allows refunds up to four years back.
- What document does the Brevard County Property Appraiser accept as proof?
- Florida law asks for a letter from the VA or the US Government certifying total and permanent disability. It does not name a form. Start with the VA Benefit Summary Letter, which you can download yourself from VA.gov in about two minutes. Per Attorney General opinion AGO 2012-16, a county cannot require VAFL 27-333 as the only acceptable proof.
