How to claim it

  1. 1Obtain a current letter on VA letterhead stating at least a 50% disability. JTA also accepts a DD214 stating the disability, or the red, white and blue VA card.
  2. 2Go in person to have your photograph taken for an ID STAR Card.
  3. 3Show the STAR Card when you board.

Worth knowingThe 50% floor is JTA's own, not Florida law. Compare HART in Tampa, which asks only that a VA health card be marked "Service Connected", and PSTA in Pinellas, which asks only for the "Veteran" designation on a driver licence. The same veteran gets three different answers.
Worth knowingSeniors 65 and over ride free on a valid Florida ID. A veteran over 65 should take that route instead — it is better than the reduced fare and needs no VA paperwork at all.
