What this benefit is

Fla. Stat. 1009.27 gives any student using benefits under 38 U.S.C. chapters 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 or 35, or 10 U.S.C. chapter 106, one fee deferment each academic year — plus a further deferment every time the benefit payment is delayed by something outside their control. This DEFERS the fees; it does not waive them. The money is still owed.

What it's worth: One fee deferment an academic year, plus one for every delayed payment

  • This DEFERS payment. It does not waive it — the fees remain owed and will have to be paid.
  • One deferment is available each academic year as of right.
  • An ADDITIONAL deferment is available each time benefit receipt is delayed by circumstances beyond the student's control. That is the provision that matters when the VA is slow.
  • It reaches anyone using benefits under 38 U.S.C. chapters 30, 31, 32, 33, 34 or 35, or 10 U.S.C. chapter 106 — including dependants and survivors using Chapter 35, who are not veterans.
  • It is administered by each Florida public educational institution.
  • Its value is avoiding late fees, holds on registration and disenrolment while the VA pays, which is not a figure but is often the difference between staying enrolled and not.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are enrolled at, or applying to, a Florida institution.
  • You are in Florida.

Not sure whether that describes you?

How to claim it

Deadline: Before the institution's fee deadline
  1. 1Ask the institution's business or bursar office for a fee deferment under Fla. Stat. 1009.27 — before the fee deadline, not after a hold is applied.
  2. 2If a VA payment is late for reasons outside your control, ask for the ADDITIONAL deferment. That is separate from the once-a-year one.
  3. 3Remember the fees are still owed. Plan for paying them, because the deferment ends.
  4. 4If you are a dependant or survivor using Chapter 35 benefits, this reaches you too — you do not have to be the veteran.
