How much is a property tax exemption worth in Cache County?
The rate shown is the county's effective property tax rate - aggregate taxes actually paid divided by aggregate home value, from the Census ACS 2023 five-year file. Every overlapping levy, credit and cap is already inside it, which makes it the honest basis for sizing an exemption's dollar value.
These are example savings for a typical home in this county, not an estimate of your own bill. Your actual saving depends on your assessed value, your taxing districts, and how this exemption interacts with any others you hold.
| Effective rate | what homeowners here actually paid |
|---|---|
| Basis | ACS 2023 five-year aggregates |
| A share of the taxable-value ceiling equal to your rating (Utah Code §59-2-1903) | about $0 a year against the county rate |
| Total exemption (Utah Code §59-2-1903) | the entire bill — about $1,200 a year against the county rate on a typical $250,000 value, and more once your other taxing units are added |
| Where to file | Cache County County government |
| Deadline | September 1, every year |

The Honorary Diploma — and a Medical Release Counts as Well
Utah school district boards of education award an honorary high school diploma to a veteran who left high school before graduating to serve in WORLD WAR II, THE KOREAN WAR OR THE VIETNAM WAR. The route worth noticing is the alternative to an honorable discharge: A RELEASE FROM ACTIVE DUTY FOR A SERVICE-RELATED DISABILITY ALSO QUALIFIES. The state veterans department will certify the qualifying service on request, which is the practical way to satisfy a district that has never handled one of these.

Resident Tuition Without the Wait — but the Window Is Twelve Months
Utah charges resident tuition at its public degree- and certificate-granting institutions to active-duty members and to VETERANS RELEASED FROM SERVICE WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF ENROLMENT. The twelve-month window is the whole constraint and it is tighter than most states': a veteran who takes a year to settle before starting study can fall outside it. If you are thinking about study at all, enrol inside the window or ask the institution what happens after it.

Purple Heart Tuition Waiver — Through a Master's Degree
A Purple Heart recipient attends any public institution of higher learning in the state tuition-free — and the waiver runs beyond a bachelor's, up to and including a master's degree.
Tuition waived at every public institution, bachelor's through master's
The Tuition Gap Program — Final Year of a First Bachelor's Degree
A state supplemental grant for a veteran in the FINAL YEAR of a first bachelor's degree whose federal education benefits are exhausted or unavailable — the rare programme aimed precisely at the veteran the GI Bill has stopped helping. It covers tuition, fees, books, education-related supplies and a housing allowance, at six public universities and four private nonprofits, subject to funding.

Guard State Tuition Waiver — Full-Time Tuition, Deadline 30 April
A waiver equivalent to the cost of full-time tuition — 12 to 18 credit hours — for the academic year, for a Utah National Guard member accepted at a Utah state public college or university. The packet is due no later than 30 April.

Guard State Tuition Assistance — $7,000 a Fiscal Year, Two-Year Commitment
Up to $7,000 a fiscal year toward tuition, fees and course materials, paid directly to the institution, for a Guard member who has applied for, maximised or been ineligible for the state waiver and federal tuition assistance. Signing incurs a two-year commitment to the Guard.
Up to $7,000 a fiscal year, paid to the institution
Scott Lundell Military Survivors Tuition Waiver
A tuition waiver at state schools for surviving dependants of servicemembers killed in action on or after 11 September 2001.

Armed Forces Exemption — Ceiling × Your Rating
The exemption is a large taxable-value ceiling multiplied by your disability percentage — $535,459 for 2025 — from a floor of just 10%. It reaches survivors too: the unmarried surviving spouse and minor orphans of a veteran with a disability, or of a veteran who died as a result of military service, qualify in their own right.
Taxable value off equal to $535,459 (2025, indexed) × your disability percentage
200 Days Deployed Out of State — the Whole Taxable Value of Your Home, Exempt
An active or reserve member on active duty outside the state for 200 days in a continuous 365-day period beginning in the prior year may claim an exemption equal to the total taxable value of their primary residence. Apply by 1 September of the following year, and reapply for each year of eligibility.
An exemption equal to the total taxable value of the primary residence

A Credit Worth 4.5% of Survivor Benefits — New Since 2024
Utah gives the survivor of a member who died on active duty, or of a reserve member who died of a service-connected cause, a NONREFUNDABLE income tax credit equal to 4.5% OF THE SURVIVOR BENEFITS received in the tax year. It is credit code AA and the statute took effect in 2024, so it is new enough that earlier advice will not mention it. Nonrefundable with NO CARRYFORWARD OR CARRYBACK means it can only reduce tax you actually owe that year — it does not bank.
4.5% of the survivor benefits received in the tax year
Utah Veterans Cemetery — Free for the Veteran, $1,002 for a Spouse
A state-operated cemetery at Bluffdale, north of Camp Williams. There are no fees for a veteran’s burial; a spouse or dependent child costs $1,002.00, adjusted annually. The mortuary, not the family, files the paperwork.
No fee for the veteran; $1,002.00 for an eligible spouse or dependent child
Utah@EASE — Free Lawyers for Debt, Consumer Fraud, Predatory Lending and Tenancy
A referral programme run by the Attorney General’s office with the veterans department and the state bar, connecting servicemembers, veterans and Guard and Reserve members with volunteer attorneys free of charge. Cases against a government body are excluded, and so are criminal, family law, personal injury and VA claims work.
Pro bono representation in covered civil matters, free of charge
Military Retirement Credit — 4.5% of the Pay, Not an Exclusion
A nonrefundable income tax credit equal to 4.5% of taxable military retirement pay, including a survivor benefit received from a deceased retiree. It cannot be claimed alongside the general retirement credit or the Social Security Benefits Credit. A survivor of a member who died on active duty claims a different credit instead.
4.5% of taxable military retirement pay, as a nonrefundable credit
The Veterans Department Holds Discharge Records — If This Was Your Home of Record
Where the home of record on release from active duty was in this state, the veterans department may hold a copy of the discharge document in its archive. A search needs your full name, date of birth and the last four digits of your social security number.
An archive search for your discharge document
Veterans Information System — Registering So the State Can Find You
A registry launched by the veterans department in 2012 with the state technology department, designed to improve the department’s ability to provide information and services. Registration is by an online application, and the department states it enhances its ability to serve you.
Registration with the state veterans department
Free Claims Assistance — the Department, Plus Three Service Organisations Down the Corridor
The veterans department offers free help to veterans and their family members with claims, applications and appeals to the federal department. It also publishes direct numbers for three national veterans service organisations, all on the same telephone exchange as the department itself.

CDL Skills Test Waived — but You Have Ninety Days
Utah waives the CDL driving skills test for an applicant with discharge papers showing an HONORABLE DISCHARGE WITHIN THE PREVIOUS 90 DAYS, who certifies commercial motor vehicle operation within the TWO YEARS BEFORE DISCHARGE on a DA348, AF2293 or equivalent, and passes all the written knowledge tests. NINETY DAYS IS THE SHORTEST CDL WINDOW IN THIS CORPUS — most states allow a year. If you intend to drive commercially, this is something to arrange before you separate, not after.

Deployed? Your Licence Fees Are Waived and Its Expiry Moves to 90 Days After You Get Back
Utah's Division of Professional Licensing waives INITIAL AND RENEWAL processing fees on request for active duty service members, and waives them again when converting a licence to INACTIVE status. Separately, a licence that EXPIRES DURING ACTIVE DUTY IS AUTOMATICALLY EXTENDED until 90 days after the last date of that duty. Automatic matters: you do not lose the licence by being unreachable. But the FEE WAIVERS ARE ON REQUEST, so those you do have to ask for.
Licence fees waived on request; expiry extended to 90 days past active duty
Veteran Indicator on a Licence or ID — In Person Only, Never at an Online Renewal
A veteran of at least 21 who can show acceptable proof of honorable discharge may add a veteran indicator to a driver licence or identification card. The catch is procedural and costs people a renewal cycle: the indicator can only be added when applying in person, never during an online renewal.

Former POW Plate — and It Transfers to an Unmarried Surviving Spouse
Utah's Former POW plate carries no initial and no annual contribution, with the ordinary fees still payable: $8.25 for the plate ($7.25 trailer, $6.75 motorcycle), $5.00 special group fee, $4.00 registration certificate, plus shipping. The provision that sets it apart from every other plate in this corpus is that IT TRANSFERS TO AN UNMARRIED SURVIVING SPOUSE. Proof is a DD-214 or a VA Statement of Service. No disability rating is required.
No contribution; transfers to an unmarried surviving spouse
Purple Heart Plate — No Contribution, Standard Fees Only
Utah's Purple Heart plate carries NO INITIAL AND NO ANNUAL CONTRIBUTION — the donation most Utah special group plates require is waived. What remains payable is ordinary: $8.25 for the plate ($6.75 for a motorcycle), a $5.00 special group plate fee, $4.00 for the registration certificate, $3.00 more for a set, and shipping. So this is a waiver of the contribution rather than of the fees, and the distinction is worth having straight before you go in expecting a free plate. Proof is a Military Order of the Purple Heart membership card or a DD-214.
No initial or annual contribution; standard plate fees still payable
Disabled Veteran Plate — No Contribution, Standard Fees Still Apply
Utah's Disabled Veteran honor plate carries a $0 initial and $0 annual contribution — but it is not a free plate: the standard plate fee, the special group plate fee and the registration certificate fee all still apply, and the DMV's fee table waives no registration fee with it.
$0 initial and annual contribution; $8.25 standard plate fee + $5.00 special group plate fee + $4.00 registration certificate still due ($6.75 motorcycle, $7.25 trailer)
Utah Honors Veterans Plate — $25 to Start, $10 a Year, and the Money Goes to Veterans
A special group plate inscribed "UTAH HONORS VETERANS" carrying branch decal emblems. It is available to any person willing to make the contribution — $25 for the initial plate and $10 at each annual renewal — and the contribution funds the state veterans department’s work.
A special group plate for a $25 initial and $10 annual contribution
Gold Star Plate — No Contribution, and Four Ways to Prove the Award
An honour special group plate for the family of a member killed while serving. There is no contribution to make, initial or annual — the cost is the ordinary plate fees: $8.25 standard plate fee, $5.00 special group plate fee and $4.00 for the registration certificate, with $3.00 more for a set. The documentation list is wide: a classification of death, a casualty report, a telegram from the Secretary of Defense, or any other document verifying the Gold Star award.
No contribution; $8.25 plate fee, $5.00 special group fee, $4.00 registration certificate
The Disabled Placard Has No Veteran Route — and a DV Plate Will Not Park You
Disabled plates and placards here run on a six-limb medical test certified by a practitioner. There is no veteran shortcut and no rating that substitutes. Only a vehicle showing a disabled person’s plate or placard may use a space reserved for a disabled person — a disabled veteran plate is not one of those credentials. The paper placard is free; a durable one is $2.50.
No veteran route — medical certification only; paper placard free, durable $2.50

Discounted Hunting and Fishing From 20% — Apply Once, Keep Forever
A resident veteran with a service-connected disability of 20% or greater buys hunting, fishing or combination licences at a discount — and after the first approval, never reapplies: the discounted rate renews automatically.
Discounted hunting, fishing or combination licences from a 20% rating
State Parks Honor Pass — or Just Your VA Benefits Letter, Until the Lifetime Pass Launches
The Veterans with Disabilities Honor Pass admits an honorably discharged resident veteran with a service-related disability to state parks — the department states no percentage threshold. A lifetime Veterans Honor Pass is being prepared and is pending final federal approval; until it launches the department says to keep using the 2025 pass together with a VA summary of benefits letter showing residency or ANY disability rating, and that the letter stays a valid entry method after the new pass arrives.

Utah Veterans Homes — No Cost at 70 Percent or Higher
Four state veterans homes. A veteran rated 70 percent or higher service-connected pays nothing; below that the VA contributes a per diem of about $120 a day toward the cost.
No cost at 70% or higher; otherwise about $120 a day of VA per diem
First-Time Homebuyer Grant — $2,500, Within Five Years of Separating
A $2,500 state grant toward a first home purchase here, for a veteran who separated within the last five years or is still serving. Owning a home in another state does not disqualify you.

Common questions about Cache County veteran benefits
- What can I claim here?
- The Utah statewide records apply in every county. We have not researched county-level programmes here, so this page shows state law and complete geography rather than a local layer.
- What is it worth in this county?
- Dollar figures use the county's EFFECTIVE property tax rate - what homeowners there actually paid per dollar of home value, from the Census ACS 2023 five-year file. It is an estimate for sizing a saving; the levy table on your own bill governs.
- Where do I file for a veteran property tax exemption in Cache County?
- File with your County assessor. The form and deadline are on each benefit record.
- What document does the Cache County County government accept as proof?
- The statute sets what must be proved. An office may tell you which document it prefers, but it may not add a requirement the statute does not contain. We have not researched per-county document quirks in Utah.
