What this benefit is

A waiver equivalent to the cost of full-time tuition — 12 to 18 credit hours — for the academic year, for a Utah National Guard member accepted at a Utah state public college or university. The packet is due no later than 30 April.

What it's worth: Full-time tuition, 12 to 18 credit hours, for the academic year

  • The application states the award is equivalent to the cost of full-time tuition — 12 to 18 credit hours — for the academic school year.
  • The Guard describes the waiver as covering tuition, not fees, books or room and board.
  • Rates differ by institution, so no dollar figure is claimed.

Who is entitled to it

  • The waiver runs to the serving member.
  • Your home is in Utah.

Not sure whether that describes you?

How to claim it

Deadline: Packet must be in no later than 30 April
  1. 1Diary 30 April. The application packet must be in no later than that date, for a school year that starts in the autumn.
  2. 2Check your expiration of term of service. It must extend at least two years past the end of the academic school year — a member close to the end of a contract is out.
  3. 3Confirm you do not already hold a four-year degree, and that the school treats you as an in-state resident. Both are listed conditions.
  4. 4Be MOS or AFSC qualified — cadets are the stated exception — and not on active duty status, subject to some exceptions.
  5. 5Build the packet properly: the application form, a short typed essay of under two pages on your educational goals, and transcripts for every school attended. Incomplete packets are the common failure.
  6. 6Plan on attending full time. Part-time enrolment is outside the waiver as described.

Re-file every year
Entitlement is retested annually. Missing a year costs that year.
CorrectionThe waiver is not a general Guard tuition benefit with rolling enrolment. It is an annual, competitive-looking packet with an essay and transcripts, due 30 April, for full-time study only.
Known gapThe Code section behind the waiver has not been read — the Legislature’s own publication refused every connection this session — so nothing is claimed about a statutory set-aside or how awards are rationed.
