What this benefit is

A referral programme run by the Attorney General’s office with the veterans department and the state bar, connecting servicemembers, veterans and Guard and Reserve members with volunteer attorneys free of charge. Cases against a government body are excluded, and so are criminal, family law, personal injury and VA claims work.

What it's worth: Pro bono representation in covered civil matters, free of charge

  • The Attorney General’s office describes eligibility as active-duty servicemembers, veterans and retirees with honorable or general discharges, and Guard and Reserve members whether currently serving or separated.
  • Covered matters are described as the federal civil relief act, the federal employment and reemployment rights act, tenant matters, debt, consumer fraud, predatory lending, immigration and wills; the veterans department’s guide also names powers of attorney and trusts.
  • Cases where the opposing party is a federal, state, county or city body are excluded, as are criminal, family law and personal injury matters and VA claims.
  • Services are described as provided free of charge through volunteer attorneys. No income limit was published.

Who is entitled to it

  • The referral runs to the servicemember, veteran or retiree.
  • Your discharge is within the range the programme names.
  • Your home is in Utah.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Check the excluded list before you invest hope in it. If the other side is a city, a county, the state or a federal agency, this programme is not the route.
  2. 2Check it again on subject matter: criminal, family law, personal injury and VA claims work are outside it.
  3. 3If you are inside — a debt collector, a landlord, a lender, a fraudulent seller, an employer over reemployment rights — request the referral. It is free.
  4. 4Request through the programme portal or through a partner agency. Eligibility is verified and the case is then reviewed for referral, so expect two steps rather than one.
  5. 5Have the DD Form 214 ready for the eligibility check.
  6. 6Keep filing your own deadlines while you wait. A referral programme does not stop a clock in your case.
  7. 7Ask the veterans department about the free monthly legal clinic at the medical centre as well — it is described as taking no appointment.

No renewal
Once granted it does not need renewing.
Worth knowingThe exclusion for matters against a public entity is broad and is where most people are caught out. A dispute with a county assessor, a state licensing board or a city code office is outside this programme even though it is civil.
Known gapNo income limit was published, and nothing read says whether a spouse can be referred in their own right. Ask when you request the referral.
