What this benefit is

Utah's Disabled Veteran honor plate carries a $0 initial and $0 annual contribution — but it is not a free plate: the standard plate fee, the special group plate fee and the registration certificate fee all still apply, and the DMV's fee table waives no registration fee with it.

What it's worth: $0 initial and annual contribution; $8.25 standard plate fee + $5.00 special group plate fee + $4.00 registration certificate still due ($6.75 motorcycle, $7.25 trailer)

  • The DMV's published fee table for this plate; a shipping fee applies to mailed plates and a set adds $3.00.

Who is entitled to it

  • You have a certified service-connected disability.
  • You are a Utah resident.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Get a letter from the Utah Department of Veterans and Military Affairs or another United States military entity certifying the veteran's disabled status — that letter is the plate's only eligibility document.
  2. 2Order online, at any DMV office, or by mail to the Motor Vehicle Division with a copy of the current registration, the certification letter, and a check for the plate fees.
  3. 3The plate may be personalized with up to six characters (four on a motorcycle), and it may be transferred to the surviving spouse so long as the spouse remains unmarried.
  4. 4The plate carries no parking privileges — a disabled windshield placard is a separate application with its own medical qualification.

CorrectionAn earlier pass left open whether the plate-fee exemption in §41-1a-1211 reaches this plate through its §41-1a-407 cross-reference. The DMV's own fee table answers in practice: the Disabled Veteran plate is charged the standard plate fee, the special group plate fee and the registration certificate fee — only the specialty contribution is $0. Descriptions of this as a free plate overstate it.
Known gapThe legislature's statute server refused every connection again this session, so the current §41-1a-1211 and §41-1a-418 text remains unread; the fee facts here rest on the DMV's published schedule.

Sources

Why only one source type: The administering DMV's own plate page carries both the eligibility requirement and the full fee table; the underlying statute host refused every connection this session, so no second source could be read.
