Veteran Indicator on a Licence or ID — In Person Only, Never at an Online Renewal

A veteran of at least 21 who can show acceptable proof of honorable discharge may add a veteran indicator to a driver licence or identification card. The catch is procedural and costs people a renewal cycle: the indicator can only be added when applying in person, never during an online renewal.

What this benefit is

A veteran of at least 21 who can show acceptable proof of honorable discharge may add a veteran indicator to a driver licence or identification card. The catch is procedural and costs people a renewal cycle: the indicator can only be added when applying in person, never during an online renewal.

What it's worth: A veteran indicator printed on your licence or identification card

  • The applicant must be at least 21 years old.
  • Acceptable documentation includes the DD214; for Second World War veterans a Record or Notice of Separation is required.
  • The indicator can only be added when applying in person — not during an online renewal.
  • The division points a veteran who cannot find their discharge papers to the state veterans department for help obtaining them.

Who is entitled to it

  • The indicator records your own service.
  • Your discharge was honorable.
  • Your home is in Utah.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Do not renew online if you want the indicator. The division states it can only be added on an in-person application, so an online renewal locks you out until the next cycle.
  2. 2Take the DD214. A Second World War veteran needs a Record or Notice of Separation instead.
  3. 3If the paperwork is missing, ask the state veterans department before booking the appointment — the division points there for help obtaining discharge records.
  4. 4The indicator goes on an identification card as well as a licence, which matters if you no longer drive.

CorrectionThe online renewal channel quietly defeats this. Nothing in an online renewal offers the indicator, and once the card is reissued a veteran is generally waiting for the next cycle or paying for a duplicate.
Known gapThe division’s page states no fee for adding the indicator, and does not say whether an early replacement card to add it costs the ordinary duplicate fee. Ask at the counter before replacing a card that is not due.

Sources

Why only one source type: The licensing division states the eligibility, the age floor, the accepted documents and the in-person restriction on its own page. The legislature’s site refused every connection this session, so the enabling section could not be read.
