How to use this, in four steps
You are on step 1. Nothing is locked — browse everything first, then check the ones that look relevant.
See what you may be entitled to
Browse every verified benefit in your state. No questions, no account — everything is open.
Check whether you qualify
Open any benefit and answer a few questions about that one. We stop as soon as we know.
Get the proof your appraisal district accepts
The Comptroller prescribes the forms for all 254 districts. What varies is which VA document satisfies them.
File before the deadline
April 30 is the deadline — and §11.439 gives you two ways past it. A missed year is usually recoverable.
Which of these sounds like you?
Pick one and we will narrow the list. You can change or clear it at any point.
Two things sharpen this a lot
Both optional. Your county decides where you file and what a property tax exemption is actually worth; your rating decides which thresholds you cross.
Where do you live?
We use this once to work out your county, because property tax is decided county by county. No benefit is ever matched on a ZIP code alone.
Your VA disability status
What does my VA disability rating unlock in Texas?
Texas gates eligibility at four points — 10%, 50%, 60% and the 100% rate — and two of them (50% and 60%) unlock things veterans routinely assume need 100%. Two further percentages, 30% and 70%, do not open anything new but increase what the $5,000-to-$12,000 property exemption pays. The largest exemption of all does not turn on the percentage at all: it turns on whether you are paid at the 100% rate, which a determination of individual unemployability satisfies.

Free Business Consulting for Veteran Entrepreneurs
The Texas Veterans Commission provides free consultation and assistance for starting and growing a veteran-owned business, through REGIONAL COORDINATORS placed in the major centres of economic growth. It covers outreach on federal and state programmes, workshops and advocacy. The statutory definition of veteran here is worth noting: it includes service in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard or Marine Corps, AND THE TEXAS NATIONAL GUARD.

Read it and check if you qualifyValor and Service Award Plates — Registration Fee Waived on One Set
Texas waives Chapter 502 registration fees on ONE SET of plates for recipients of qualifying awards: the Bronze Star and Bronze Star with Valor, the Air Medal and Air Medal with Valor, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Air Force Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, Pearl Harbor Survivor and Medal of Honor plates among them. Two named plate types are EXCLUDED from the fee exemption — the Commendation Medal plate under §504.315(c) and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal plate under §504.315(q) — so holding a decoration is not by itself enough; it depends which plate.
VeteransApplies statewideChapter 502 registration fees waived on one set of plates
Read it and check if you qualifyThe Diploma, Even If You Already Hold a GED
Texas school districts issue a high school diploma to an honorably discharged veteran who left school after completing GRADE 6 OR HIGHER to serve, and was scheduled to graduate AFTER 1940 AND BEFORE 1975, OR AFTER 1989. The conflicts named run from WWII and Korea through Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan. Two things set this apart. The AFTER 1989 window means it is not only a benefit for the very old. And IT IS AVAILABLE EVEN IF THE VETERAN ALREADY HOLDS A HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY CERTIFICATE — a GED does not disqualify you.
VeteransApplies statewideA high school diploma issued by a school district
Read it and check if you qualifyCertified Vital Records Free for a Claim Against the Government
The Texas state registrar issues certified copies of vital records WITHOUT FEE to a veteran when the copy is for use in settling a claim against the government. Birth, marriage and death certificates are routine requirements on VA claims and survivor applications, and each one ordinarily carries a fee. The condition is the purpose: the copy must be for the claim, and you should say so when you request it rather than afterwards.
VeteransApplies statewideCertified copies of vital records issued without fee
Read it and check if you qualifyFree Tuition for the Child of a POW or Missing Servicemember — Nearly Every Fee Too
Texas exempts the child of a member classified by the Department of Defense as a PRISONER OF WAR OR MISSING IN ACTION from tuition, service fees, lab fees, building use fees AND ALL OTHER FEES, at Texas public institutions. The only things left payable are room, board, clothing fees and deposits. The status is tested AT THE TIME OF THE CHILD'S REGISTRATION, and the parent must be a Texas domiciliary — so a family whose member is still listed as missing is inside this, term by term.
StudentsApplies statewideTuition and all fees waived except room, board, clothing fees and deposits
Read it and check if you qualifyYour Medical Records Free for a VA Claim — From Every Provider
Texas puts an obligation on health care providers and facilities to give ONE COMPLETE COPY of your medical, mental health AND BILLING records FREE OF CHARGE, PER PROVIDER, when the records are for a VA disability compensation or pension claim. LATER SUPPLEMENTAL RECORDS ARE ALSO FREE on request. Records charges are one of the real costs of building a claim, and this removes them. You need a statement or document from the accredited representative or agency showing the records are for the claim.
VeteransApplies statewideOne complete copy of your records free, per provider, for a VA claim
Read it and check if you qualifyFree VA-Accredited Claims Representation From the State
The Texas Veterans Commission is the state's designated agency for veterans' claims, and its representation is FREE and VA-ACCREDITED. It covers presenting, proving and establishing claims, privileges, rights and benefits under federal, state OR LOCAL law. This matters because paid claim agents advertise heavily to veterans and charge percentages of retroactive awards for work the state does for nothing. If you are considering paying someone to file a VA claim, this is the record to read first.
VeteransApplies statewideFree VA-accredited representation and counselling on claims

Are veteran benefits different in each Texas county?
Every statewide benefit applies in all 254 counties, and the Comptroller prescribes the same exemption forms everywhere — so Texas has less county-to-county variation than states where each county writes its own rules. What does change is what an exemption is worth: county tax rates run from about $0.15 to over $1.00 per $100, and once your school district is added the combined rate ranges from roughly $0.90 to $2.35. The same $12,000 exemption is worth two and a half times as much in one county as another.
