How much is a property tax exemption worth in Midland County?
Midland County levies $0.121374 per $100 of taxable value for 2025 in county tax, published by the Texas Comptroller. Every parcel in the county pays at least this. Your school district usually adds two to three times as much again — the median of the districts based here brings the combined rate to about $1.066624 per $100 — so your real saving is materially larger than the figures below.
These are example savings for a typical home in this county, not an estimate of your own bill. Your actual saving depends on your assessed value, your taxing districts, and how this exemption interacts with any others you hold.
| County rate | $0.121374 per $100 (2025) |
|---|---|
| Rate including the median school district | about $1.066624 per $100 |
| $12,000 exemption (Tex. Tax Code §11.22) | about $15 a year against the county rate |
| Total exemption (§11.131) | the entire bill — about $303 a year against the county rate on a typical $250,000 value, and more once your other taxing units are added |
| Where to file | Midland County Central Appraisal District |
| Deadline | April 30, every year |
Which document does the Midland County Central Appraisal District accept?
The Comptroller prescribes Form 50-114 and Form 50-135 statewide, so the form is never the question. What matters is that your VA letter shows the percentage and, if it applies, your unemployability status.

The Comptroller prescribes the forms every appraisal district must use — Form 50-114 for the total exemption and the donated-home exemption, Form 50-135 for the $5,000 to $12,000 exemption and the survivor routes. A district cannot invent its own form or require a document the statute does not. Get the printable one-pager to hand to the clerk.

Valor and Service Award Plates — Registration Fee Waived on One Set
Texas waives Chapter 502 registration fees on ONE SET of plates for recipients of qualifying awards: the Bronze Star and Bronze Star with Valor, the Air Medal and Air Medal with Valor, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Air Force Cross, the Distinguished Service Cross, Pearl Harbor Survivor and Medal of Honor plates among them. Two named plate types are EXCLUDED from the fee exemption — the Commendation Medal plate under §504.315(c) and the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal plate under §504.315(q) — so holding a decoration is not by itself enough; it depends which plate.
Chapter 502 registration fees waived on one set of plates
Disabled Veteran Licence Plates — Free Registration

Gold Star Plate — Foster and Step Relations Count, and the Fee Subsection Is Gone
Four plates — Gold Star Mother, Gold Star Father, Gold Star Spouse and Gold Star Family — for the family of a person who died while serving in the armed forces. The statute defines "immediate family member" unusually widely: parent, child, sibling, adoptive parent, adoptive child, foster parent, foster child, stepparent and stepchild all qualify. One set at a time, per person.
Gold Star Mother, Father, Spouse or Family plates — one set at a time
Ask for the Access Symbol on the Plate — the DV Plate Alone Will Not Park You
A Disabled Veteran plate exempts you from parking meters. It does not admit you to a reserved accessible space: §681.006 accepts only the disability plates issued under §504.201 or a disabled parking placard. §504.202(b-1) is the bridge — a veteran who also meets the general disability test may elect a Disabled Veteran plate carrying the International Symbol of Access, and then receive a placard for each set of plates.

education(7)
The Diploma, Even If You Already Hold a GED
Texas school districts issue a high school diploma to an honorably discharged veteran who left school after completing GRADE 6 OR HIGHER to serve, and was scheduled to graduate AFTER 1940 AND BEFORE 1975, OR AFTER 1989. The conflicts named run from WWII and Korea through Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan. Two things set this apart. The AFTER 1989 window means it is not only a benefit for the very old. And IT IS AVAILABLE EVEN IF THE VETERAN ALREADY HOLDS A HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY CERTIFICATE — a GED does not disqualify you.

Free Tuition for the Child of a POW or Missing Servicemember — Nearly Every Fee Too
Texas exempts the child of a member classified by the Department of Defense as a PRISONER OF WAR OR MISSING IN ACTION from tuition, service fees, lab fees, building use fees AND ALL OTHER FEES, at Texas public institutions. The only things left payable are room, board, clothing fees and deposits. The status is tested AT THE TIME OF THE CHILD'S REGISTRATION, and the parent must be a Texas domiciliary — so a family whose member is still listed as missing is inside this, term by term.
Tuition and all fees waived except room, board, clothing fees and deposits
Hazlewood Act Tuition Exemption — 150 Credit Hours
Waives tuition and most fees for up to 150 credit hours at any Texas public college or university. Unused hours can be given to your child.

Hazlewood Legacy — Transferring Your Unused Hours to a Child

Your parent's unused Hazlewood hours, up to 150, at a Texas public institution
Hazlewood Tuition Exemption for a Veteran's Spouse
A full 150 credit hours of tuition and most fees at a Texas public institution for the spouse of a veteran who died in service, died of a service-connected cause, is missing in action, or is 100% disabled or holds IU.

Hazlewood Tuition Exemption for a Veteran's Dependent Child
A full 150 credit hours for the child of a veteran who died in service, died of a service-connected cause, is missing in action, or is 100% disabled or holds IU. This is not the Legacy transfer — it is the child's own entitlement.
Up to 150 credit hours of tuition and most fees at a Texas public institution
Texas National Guard State Tuition Assistance
Up to $10,000 a semester in tuition and mandatory fees for a drilling member of the Texas Army or Air National Guard or the Texas State Guard. Competitive and appropriated, not an entitlement.
Up to $10,000 per fall and spring semester

Certified Vital Records Free for a Claim Against the Government
The Texas state registrar issues certified copies of vital records WITHOUT FEE to a veteran when the copy is for use in settling a claim against the government. Birth, marriage and death certificates are routine requirements on VA claims and survivor applications, and each one ordinarily carries a fee. The condition is the purpose: the copy must be for the claim, and you should say so when you request it rather than afterwards.
Certified copies of vital records issued without fee
Your Medical Records Free for a VA Claim — From Every Provider
Texas puts an obligation on health care providers and facilities to give ONE COMPLETE COPY of your medical, mental health AND BILLING records FREE OF CHARGE, PER PROVIDER, when the records are for a VA disability compensation or pension claim. LATER SUPPLEMENTAL RECORDS ARE ALSO FREE on request. Records charges are one of the real costs of building a claim, and this removes them. You need a statement or document from the accredited representative or agency showing the records are for the claim.
One complete copy of your records free, per provider, for a VA claim
Free VA-Accredited Claims Representation From the State
The Texas Veterans Commission is the state's designated agency for veterans' claims, and its representation is FREE and VA-ACCREDITED. It covers presenting, proving and establishing claims, privileges, rights and benefits under federal, state OR LOCAL law. This matters because paid claim agents advertise heavily to veterans and charge percentages of retroactive awards for work the state does for nothing. If you are considering paying someone to file a VA claim, this is the record to read first.
Free VA-accredited representation and counselling on claims
Free Recording of Your DD214 with the County Clerk
Your county clerk must record your discharge papers at no charge, keep them confidential for 75 years, and give you free certified copies for life.

Texas Does Not Tax Military Retirement — Because It Taxes No Income at All
Widely listed as a Texas veteran benefit. It is not one. Texas has no personal income tax for anybody, and the constitution forbids creating one.
No Texas income tax applies — and none would apply to anyone
Fund for Veterans' Assistance — Housing, Transport, Legal and Mental Health Help
Texas funds direct assistance through local organisations rather than paying veterans itself. You do not apply to the state — you find the funded organisation covering your county.

Common questions about Midland County veteran benefits
- What veteran benefits are available in Midland County, Texas?
- 51 verified benefits apply in Midland County: 51 Texas statewide benefits that apply in all 254 counties. They include a total property tax exemption on your home, the Hazlewood Act tuition exemption of up to 150 credit hours, a free Disabled Veteran licence plate at a 50% rating, free tolls on TxDOT-operated toll roads, and free metered parking statewide.
- How much is the Texas disabled veteran property tax exemption worth in Midland County?
- Midland County levies $0.121374 per $100 of taxable value for 2025 in county tax alone. For a typical home the $12,000 exemption under Tex. Tax Code §11.22 is therefore worth about $15 a year against the county rate here — and several times that once your school district rate is added. The total exemption under §11.131 removes your entire bill, roughly $303 a year against the county rate on a typical $250,000 value, and far more in practice.
- Where do I file for a veteran property tax exemption in Midland County?
- With the Midland County Central Appraisal District, on Form 50-114 for the total exemption or Form 50-135 for the partial one, by April 30. If you are past that date, file anyway — §11.439 lets the chief appraiser accept a late application up to five years after the delinquency date, and within one year of the VA approving your disability.
- What document does the Midland County Central Appraisal District accept as proof?
- The Texas Comptroller prescribes the forms for every appraisal district, so the form is settled. What you need behind it is a VA letter showing your disability percentage and, where it applies to you, your individual unemployability status. Start with the VA Benefit Summary Letter, which you can download yourself from VA.gov in about two minutes.
