How to claim it

  1. 1Pre-register eligibility now if you can. Doing it in advance means your family is not assembling a DD214 in the week after a death.
  2. 2Four cemeteries are open — Killeen, Abilene, Mission and Corpus Christi. A fifth, the West Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Lubbock, is listed by the GLO as coming in 2026 and is not yet operating, so do not plan around it.
  3. 3Your funeral director files the interment packet with the VLB.

Worth knowingSpouses and dependent children are interred at no charge too, which is the part families most often do not know. It is worth telling them the benefit exists while you can.
Worth knowingThis is separate from the federal VA burial allowance and from interment at a national cemetery. You can be eligible for more than one; the state cemeteries are simply closer for most Texans than the national ones.

Why only one source type: The Veterans Land Board publishes both the burial benefit terms and the interment packet; the enabling statute (Nat. Res. Code ch. 164) creates the cemeteries without setting interment eligibility, which follows the federal standard.
