What this benefit is

Adds "VETERAN" — or "DISABLED VETERAN" at a 50% rating — to your licence or ID at no charge. Several local benefits accept it in place of a VA letter.

What it's worth: Proof of veteran status you already carry in your wallet

  • The designation itself is free when you apply for, renew, or change a licence or ID.
  • It is worth getting early: it is the cheapest artifact in the chain and several local programmes accept it instead of a VA letter.

Who is entitled to it

  • You served in the U.S. armed forces.
  • You were honorably discharged.
  • You are a Texas resident.
  • Your home is in Texas.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Get form DL-28 verified by a Texas Veterans Commission or county veterans service office.
  2. 2Take it to a DPS office when you next renew, or make a standalone change.
  3. 3If you are rated 50 percent or more, ask for "DISABLED VETERAN" rather than plain "VETERAN".

Worth knowingThe DL-28 has to be signed and stamped by a veterans service office before DPS will accept it. That step catches people out — DPS cannot verify your service themselves.

Sources

Why only one source type: Both cited sources are DPS pages. The designation is created by rule rather than by a statute we have captured and hashed.
