Verified August 22, 2026

What this benefit is

A VLB home loan at a below-market rate, discounted further for a veteran with a 30% or greater service-connected disability.

What it's worth: A half-point interest rate discount at a 30% or greater rating

  • Illustrative only, and excluded from your annual total: the saving depends entirely on your loan size and term.
  • At the rates published in August 2026 the base rate was 6.35% and the disabled-veteran rate 5.85% — half a point, which on a $300,000 30-year loan is roughly $95 a month.
  • Loans run up to $832,750 on fixed 15, 20, 25 or 30 year terms, and the home must be your primary residence in Texas within 60 days of closing.
  • VLB rates change frequently. Confirm the current rate before relying on any figure here.

Who is entitled to it

  • You served in the U.S. armed forces.
  • You are buying a home.
  • You are a Texas resident.
  • Your home is in Texas.

How to claim it

  1. 1Find a VLB-participating lender — the loan is originated by a lender, not by the VLB directly.
  2. 2Provide your VA disability letter up front if you are claiming the discounted rate.

Worth knowingThis is a State of Texas programme and is separate from a federal VA loan. You can use a VA loan guarantee with VLB financing, but they are two different things and the disability discount here is the VLB's own.

Sources

Why only one source type: The Veterans Land Board publishes the programme terms and rates. The statute sets the programme up without setting its rates, so it is cited as the operating source rather than the authority.
