How much is a property tax exemption worth in Cumberland County?
The rate shown is the county's effective property tax rate - aggregate taxes actually paid divided by aggregate home value, from the Census ACS 2023 five-year file. Every overlapping levy, credit and cap is already inside it, which makes it the honest basis for sizing an exemption's dollar value.
These are example savings for a typical home in this county, not an estimate of your own bill. Your actual saving depends on your assessed value, your taxing districts, and how this exemption interacts with any others you hold.
| Effective rate | what homeowners here actually paid |
|---|---|
| Basis | ACS 2023 five-year aggregates |
| $6,000 of just value ($50,000 with an SAH grant) (36 M.R.S. §653) | about $0 a year against the county rate |
| Total exemption (36 M.R.S. §653) | the entire bill — about $2,675 a year against the county rate on a typical $250,000 value, and more once your other taxing units are added |

Free Camping at State Parks and Public Lands at 100% — Family Included
A Maine resident veteran rated 100% disabled is fully exempt from RESERVATION and CAMPING fees at Maine State Parks and Public Lands. A Lifetime Free Day-Use Pass to State Parks, Historic Sites and the State Museum
A Maine resident veteran with an honorable or general-under-honorable-conditions discharge gets free day-use admission to Maine State Parks, Historic Sites and the State Museum FOR LIFE. A Standing Fund That Buys Disabled Veterans Days in the Field
The Hunting Opportunities for Disabled Veterans Fund is a nonlapsing fund administered by the director of the Bureau of Veterans’ Services for the purpose of supporting hunting opportunities in this state for disabled veterans. The director, with help from the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, requests proposals from organisations that provide disabled veterans with hunting opportunities, and funds those judged most effective.

Your Job Held While You Serve — and Graduated Windows to Come Back
26 M.R.S. §811 gives a National Guard or Reserve member ordered to state or federal military duty a leave of absence AS OF RIGHT, from ANY public or private employer, and reinstatement preserving pay, seniority, benefits and status as if continuously employed. The return-to-work windows are graduated by length of service — 24 hours after three days or less, up to 90 days after a long tour. A service-related disability that prevents you doing the original job triggers placement in an equivalent one.
Leave as of right, and reinstatement as if you had never left
An Interview You Must Be Offered — and First Place in a Layoff
In filling any classified state position, the employing agency must offer an interview to any veteran or gold star spouse who meets the minimum qualifications. In a reduction in personnel, a veteran or gold star spouse must be retained ahead of competing employees in the same classification with equal seniority, status and performance reviews.
An interview the agency must offer for a classified vacancy, and retention priority in a layoff
Fifteen Days of Family Military Leave — for the Spouse, Domestic Partner or Parent of Somebody Deployed
An employer with 15 or more employees must give an eligible employee up to 15 days of family military leave per deployment, taken in the 15 days before deployment, during it if the member gets leave, or in the 15 days after. It is available to the spouse, domestic partner or parent of a Maine resident deployed for longer than 180 days. The leave may be unpaid, but the job — or an equivalent one — must be there afterwards.
Up to 15 days of protected leave per deployment, with restoration to the same or an equivalent position

Purple Heart, Medal of Honor, Ex-POW and Pearl Harbor Plates — Registration Free
29-A M.R.S. §524 issues the registration certificate AND plates at NO FEE to Purple Heart recipients — up to TWO vehicles — and to Medal of Honor recipients, former prisoners of war and Pearl Harbor survivors. Municipal excise tax under 36 M.R.S. §1482 is still payable, so the town bill does not disappear.

Disabled Veteran Plates — No Registration Fee, Up to Three Vehicles
A veteran certified permanently disabled and receiving 100% service-connected benefits registers up to three vehicles with no annual registration fee, with disabled-veteran plates on request — and the excise tax that towns collect on registration is exempt for total service-connected disability as well.

The excise tax the town collects is still payable. The plate goes on one vehicle only, and a family member who does not drive can be issued a single recognition plate at no fee.
No registration fee on the vehicle carrying the plate; excise tax still payable; one vehicle
The Parking Placard Turns on Walking, Not on a Rating — But It Costs Nothing, and Meters Are Free
A disability plate or placard is issued on a medical certificate that the applicant’s ability to walk is impaired in one of seven listed ways. The Bureau of Motor Vehicles charges no additional fee for either. A vehicle displaying a placard or a disability plate parks free at a meter and for twice the posted time limit. A veteran certified 100% disabled may be issued the placard at no fee alongside the disabled-veteran registration.
No additional fee for the plate or placard; free metered parking and twice the posted time limit
The Island Ferries Have No Veteran Fare — Read From the Tariff Itself
The Maine State Ferry Service tariff is the whole fare authority for the six island routes, and it names every concession it gives: children under six free, a minor fare, free passage for island school students and school employees, complimentary walk-on passage for retired ferry service employees, and a five-for-four commuter book. There is no veteran fare, no disabled-veteran fare, and no Purple Heart or Medal of Honor provision anywhere in it.

$6,000 Off — $7,000 for WWI-Era, $50,000 With an Adapted-Housing Grant
$6,000 of just value comes off for a wartime veteran at 62, or at any age for a veteran receiving a federal pension or compensation for total disability — service-connected or not. A WWI-era veteran's tier is $7,000, and a veteran who received a specially adapted housing grant has $50,000. The same $6,000 reaches an unremarried surviving spouse or minor child of a deceased eligible veteran, and an unremarried parent aged 62 or over of a veteran whose service-connected death draws federal compensation.

A homeowner who is 65, or who cannot be employed by reason of disability on 1 April, may defer the property tax on their homestead. The income ceiling is $80,000 for a sole owner and the liquid asset ceiling $100,000; for multiple owners the figures are $80,000 and $150,000. Veterans' Emergency Financial Assistance — $2,000, Through Veterans Forward
A dedicated, non-lapsing state fund under 37-B §505 pays a grant of up to $2,000 to a resident veteran on one of two routes: waiting on a decision after filing a valid VA pension claim, or financial need plus an emergency. It operates as the Veterans' Emergency Financial Assistance Program, and applications go through the bureau's contracted provider, Fedcap — Veterans Forward, on 844-653-0316. Eligible uses include vehicle repairs needed to keep a job and dental emergencies up to $500, as well as uninsured fire, flood or storm damage and hardship that would leave the veteran homeless.
A grant of up to $2,000
A Veterans' Benefit Cannot Be Attached — and the Home Is Protected to $160,000
Maine's exemption article puts a veterans' benefit beyond attachment and execution outright, alongside social security, disability and unemployment benefits. The residence exemption is $80,000, rising to $160,000 where minor dependants live there or where the debtor or a dependant is 60 or older or disabled and unable to engage in substantial gainful employment. A deposit account is protected to $3,000.

Deployment Is Not an Adverse Factor — the Custody Section for Guard and Reserve Parents
A court may not treat departure from the family residence, or absence from the child, as an adverse factor in determining parental rights and responsibilities where the departing parent is a Guard or Reserve member under an order to active duty for more than 30 days and the absence is due to compliance with military orders. Nor may it order a change of the child’s primary physical residence during such an absence unless the change is in the best interest of the child.
Two statutory bars a Maine court must observe when a Guard or Reserve parent is away under orders
Maine’s Rental Chapters Carry No Military Termination Right — the Federal Act Is the Route
Maine’s residential landlord-and-tenant law was read in full and contains no military lease-termination provision: no notice rule for deployment or a permanent change of station, no cap on an early-termination charge, and no route for a spouse. The termination rights the chapters do create are the 30-day and 7-day notices, and a 7-day or 30-day route for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault or stalking. A servicemember’s route is the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.
No state military termination right — knowledge, not money
The State’s Own Civil Relief Act — Testify by Video, Get an Expedited Hearing, Hand Contact Rights to a Relative
Maine has its own Servicemembers’ Civil Relief Act. Where military duties materially affect a member’s ability to appear, the court SHALL allow testimony and evidence by telephone, video teleconference or the internet, and SHALL hold an expedited hearing, unless good cause is shown. In a parent-child contact case the court shall allow the member to transfer contact rights temporarily to a blood or marriage relative with a significant connection to the child. A stay is also available, but only to Guard and Reserve members.
Remote testimony and an expedited hearing as of right; temporary transfer of parent-child contact; a stay for Guard and Reserve members
An Other-Than-Honorable Discharge Can Be Set Aside For State Benefits — Three Grounds, and a Clock in Days
A veteran who received an other than honorable discharge may apply to the Qualifying Condition Review Board for eligibility for the rights, privileges and benefits Maine grants veterans, where the characterisation was based on sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression; on conduct associated with a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder or acquired brain injury; or on conduct or circumstances relating to being a victim of military sexual assault. The board reviews within 30 days, recommends within 30 more, and the director decides within 10.

Fifteen Thousand a Year, In Statute, For the Vans to Togus
The Coordinated Veterans Assistance Fund pays $15,000 annually to a veterans’ service organisation that has run a programme of providing transportation to veterans receiving medical services at the Veterans Administration Hospital at Togus, or at outreach centers of that hospital. The same fund pays $64,500 a year to each organisation maintaining a veteran service officer at Togus, and the director must report the distributions to the Legislature every February.
A funded ride to Togus — $15,000 a year goes to the organisation that runs it
A Sentencing Docket For Veterans, Established by the Chief Justice
Maine has veterans treatment courts in statute: a specialized sentencing docket in select criminal cases where the defendant is a veteran or a member of the United States Armed Forces, which the Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Court may establish. State departments may seek federal funding and contract for them, and the Administrative Office of the Courts may coordinate treatment and social services. They sit in Cumberland and Kennebec counties.

Examination and Licence Fees — Waivable for a Veteran, If You Ask

One Free Vital Record for a VA Claim — Against a $15 Counter Price
Maine charges $15 for a certified copy of a vital record and $6 for each additional copy ordered at the same time. The Veteran Flag on Your Licence — Free at Renewal, $5 If You Cannot Wait
The Secretary of State must, on request, issue a driver’s licence or non-driver identification card carrying a military service designation to a serving member or an honourably discharged veteran. Adding it at renewal costs nothing; adding it in between costs the $5 duplicate credential fee. It is a proof-of-status card that named businesses and the state park system accept in place of a DD214.
Free when added at renewal; $5 duplicate fee to add it at any other time

The Town Must Keep the Grave — and Flag It Every Memorial Day
A municipality, cemetery corporation or cemetery association owning a public burying ground shall keep the grave, headstone, monument or marker of any veteran in good condition and repair from 1 May to 30 September. Separately, each municipality shall decorate veterans' graves with an American flag and appropriate flag holders on the day Memorial Day is observed. Common questions about Cumberland County veteran benefits
- What can I claim here?
- The Maine statewide records apply in every county. We have not researched county-level programmes here, so this page shows state law and complete geography rather than a local layer.
- What is it worth in this county?
- Dollar figures use the county's EFFECTIVE property tax rate - what homeowners there actually paid per dollar of home value, from the Census ACS 2023 five-year file. It is an estimate for sizing a saving; the levy table on your own bill governs.
- Where do I file for a veteran property tax exemption in Cumberland County?
- File with your County assessor. The form and deadline are on each benefit record.
- What document does the Cumberland County Municipal assessor accept as proof?
- The statute sets what must be proved. An office may tell you which document it prefers, but it may not add a requirement the statute does not contain. We have not researched per-county document quirks in Maine.
