Healthcare Coverage Overview

Veteran spouses may be eligible for comprehensive healthcare coverage through CHAMPVA and other VA programs.

CHAMPVA Coverage

The Civilian Health and Medical Program provides comprehensive healthcare coverage for eligible spouses of veterans with service-connected disabilities.

Beyond CHAMPVA, spouses may access additional healthcare benefits and support services through various VA programs.

CHAMPVA Eligibility Requirements

Important Note

You must NOT qualify for TRICARE to be eligible for CHAMPVA. These programs cannot be used simultaneously.

You may be eligible if you are:

The spouse of a Veteran who has been rated permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition

The surviving spouse of a Veteran who died from a service-connected disability

The surviving spouse of a Veteran who was rated permanently and totally disabled at the time of death

A survivor of a service member who died in the line of duty and do not qualify for TRICARE

Special Considerations

Age 65 and Older

If you are 65 or older, you must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to maintain CHAMPVA eligibility.

Remarriage

A surviving spouse who remarries after turning 55 retains CHAMPVA benefits.

CHAMPVA is a cost-sharing program where the VA covers a significant portion of your medical expenses. If you have other health insurance, CHAMPVA typically serves as the secondary payer.

How to Apply

Gather Required Documents

Collect your marriage certificate, veteran's DD-214, VA rating decision, and other supporting documentation.

Complete Application

Fill out VA Form 10-10d (Application for CHAMPVA Benefits) completely and accurately.

Submit Application

Mail your completed application and supporting documents to the CHAMPVA office for processing.
