Total Disability Benefits
Complete guide to 100% VA disability benefits - understanding total disability ratings, additional benefits, and how to maximize your compensation.
What is 100% Disability Rating?
A 100% VA disability rating means the VA has determined that your service-connected conditions completely prevent you from working and performing daily activities. This is the highest disability rating available and comes with the maximum monthly compensation and additional benefits.
2025 Maximum Compensation
Veterans with 100% disability rating receive $3,831.30 per month without dependents, or $4,031.30 per month with a spouse.
Types of 100% Ratings
Schedular 100%
Your combined service-connected disabilities equal 100% using the VA's rating schedule. This can be from a single 100% condition or multiple conditions that combine to 100%.
Examples:
- • Single condition rated at 100% (e.g., severe PTSD, total blindness)
- • Multiple conditions combining to 100% (e.g., 70% + 60% + 30%)
- • Bilateral factor increasing combined rating to 100%
Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU)
You have a combined rating of 70% or higher (with at least one condition at 40% or higher) but cannot maintain substantially gainful employment due to your service-connected disabilities.
TDIU Requirements:
- • Combined rating of 70% or higher, OR
- • One condition at 60% and combined rating of 70%, OR
- • One condition at 40% and combined rating of 70%
- • Unable to secure or maintain substantially gainful employment
