Family Caregiver Program

Comprehensive support and benefits for family members providing care to eligible veterans with serious injuries.

Program Overview

The Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) provides support, resources, training, and financial assistance to family members caring for eligible veterans.

Monthly Stipend

Tax-free monthly payment based on veteran's care needs and local costs

Ranges from $1,057 to $3,139 per month depending on care level

Healthcare Coverage

Comprehensive healthcare through CHAMPVA for eligible caregivers

Includes medical, dental, and mental health services

Training and Support

Comprehensive training program and ongoing support services

Initial training plus ongoing education and peer support

Respite Care

Up to 30 days per year of substitute care services

Allows caregivers time for rest and personal activities

Eligibility Requirements

Both the veteran and family caregiver must meet specific requirements to participate in the program.

Veteran Requirements

VA disability rating of 70% or higher

Discharged from U.S. military or have medical discharge date

Need at least 6 months of continuous, in-person personal care services

Enrolled in VA health care

Serious injury incurred or aggravated in line of duty

Caregiver Requirements

At least 18 years old

Spouse, child, parent, stepfamily member, or extended family member

Live full time with veteran or willing to do so

Complete caregiver education and training

Demonstrate ability to provide personal care services

Important Note

As of July 18, 2025, VA plans to extend PCAFC eligibility for certain "legacy" veterans and their family caregivers through September 30, 2028, to provide consistency and stability.

Application Process

Follow these steps to apply for the Family Caregiver Program and begin receiving benefits.

Initial Application

Submit VA Form 10-10CG online or by mail

30-45 days for initial review

Clinical Assessment

VA conducts comprehensive assessment of veteran's care needs

2-4 weeks after application

Caregiver Training

Complete required training program and demonstrate competency

4-6 weeks training period

Program Enrollment

Begin receiving benefits and ongoing support services

Benefits start after training completion
