How to claim it

  1. 1Get the war-related disabled declaration letter from the VA regional office first. It is the document that replaces the physician’s certificate, and nothing else on the list substitutes for it.
  2. 2Have a current state credential in hand. The division names an existing credential as one of the three requirements.
  3. 3File by fax or by post to the Disability Parking Placard Office. Approval comes back by mail rather than over the counter.
  4. 4If you are rated below 100%, do not stop — apply for the ordinary placard with a physician’s approval, which the division points to in the same paragraph.
  5. 5Expect the possibility of a further request; the division states additional documentation may be required.

Worth knowingThe letter is the whole benefit. Veterans at 100% routinely book and pay for a physician appointment they do not need, because every general placard page in the country is written around a doctor’s signature and this route is not.
CorrectionThe disabled veteran plate and this placard are different things applied for in different places. The plate needs an executive certification obtainable only from the state veterans department office in Providence; the placard needs a VA regional office letter sent to a placard desk in Cranston.
Known gapThe division’s page states no fee and no expiry term for the veteran placard. Ask the placard office what the term is before assuming it is permanent.
