How to claim it

  1. 1Get the certificate BEFORE registering. This is the single reason members lose this benefit: they enrol, then ask, and the exemption cannot be applied retrospectively.
  2. 2Plan around seat availability. The exemption is stated to depend on a seat being free, which in practice means popular summer courses fill with fee-paying students first.
  3. 3Count against the enlistment allowance, not the calendar. Four courses per enlistment is the underlying ceiling, and each year of extension adds four more.
  4. 4Treat this as separate from the term-time waiver, because it is. Claiming one does nothing for the other and the paperwork routes differently.
  5. 5Combine with the federal education benefit where you can. The office states the exemption may be used with it.
  6. 6If a certification programme rather than a degree is what you want, say so — certification study is named alongside degree study in the eligibility.

CorrectionTwo programmes, similar names, different rules. The assistance programme covers autumn and spring at up to five classes; this exemption covers summer at one course a semester. A member who reads only one page gets a third of the entitlement.
Worth knowingThe extension arithmetic is quietly valuable. Four more courses for each year of extension means a member weighing whether to extend has an education figure to put against the decision.
Known gapThe office does not publish a RIGL citation for this exemption, a service obligation, or what "seat availability" means in practice. Ask the education office how late a seat is confirmed before planning a summer around it.
