How to claim it

  1. 1Get the Executive Certification from the federal VA regional office desk at the state veterans affairs office on Westminster Street in Providence — the DMV accepts no other form for this plate.
  2. 2One set per veteran, on a vehicle of 12,000 lbs GVWR or less; there is no charge for the plates or the registration.
  3. 3On the veteran's death the plates transfer to the spouse until remarriage. The Ex-POW plate (§31-3-46) and Purple Heart plate (§31-3-48, two sets allowed) carry the same no-charge treatment with their own documentation.
  4. 4A separate veteran disability parking placard requires 100% service-connected status with a war-related declaration letter.

CorrectionSummaries describe this as a free plate. The DMV page says more: "There is no charge for the plates or registration for this plate type" — the recurring registration fee disappears too, which over years is worth far more than the plate.
