What this benefit is

Skilled, intermediate and memory care at the homes in Lebanon and The Dalles, for veterans, spouses, surviving spouses and Gold Star parents — at rates the homes publish rather than quote on request.

What it's worth: $331.80 a day for a veteran in general care; $360.15 for a spouse

  • Rates are the homes' published daily room rates effective 1 January 2023: veteran general care $331.80, veteran memory care $342.30, spouse general care $360.15, spouse memory care $370.65.
  • The daily rate covers room, board and skilled nursing care along with amenities and activities.
  • What a resident actually pays out of pocket depends on how much of that rate private funds, federal benefits, Medicare or Medicaid carry — the homes describe residents combining all of them.

Who is entitled to it

  • The homes admit veterans, spouses and surviving spouses — and Gold Star parents.
  • The veteran was discharged under general or honorable conditions.
  • Your home is in Oregon.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Get a physician's determination that skilled or intermediate nursing home care is needed. That is a stated condition of admission.
  2. 2Work out the resident portion before you apply. Demonstrating the ability to pay it is itself a condition of admission, not a formality that follows.
  3. 3Ask what the home cannot provide. Admission is refused where an applicant needs services beyond the home's capability, or presents traits that would be a safety risk to others.
  4. 4Price memory care separately if it is likely to be needed. It carries a surcharge of $10.50 a day over general care on both the veteran and the spouse rate.
  5. 5A veteran rated 70 percent or higher who needs nursing care should ask the home about VA coverage of the cost before committing to private pay.

CorrectionA spouse pays more than a veteran for the same care — $360.15 against $331.80 a day in general care. Couples planning a joint move routinely budget one rate for two people.
Worth knowingThe published rates carry a date: 1 January 2023. Confirm the current figure with the home before relying on it for a budget.
Worth knowingThe Gold Star route is written as a parent who lost a child to wartime service, and sits alongside the spouse route rather than under it.

Sources

Why only one source type: The home's own admissions page carries the eligibility list, the four admission conditions and the full daily rate card. The rules behind it have not been read this session, so no ORS or OAR citation is offered as authority.
