Deadline: When a finding of incompetence is made, or capacity is failing
  1. 1Ask about the state programme before hiring a private fiduciary. A professional conservator charges for exactly this work and families routinely do not know the department offers it.
  2. 2Understand the gate: it turns on a finding by the federal department that the veteran cannot manage their federal resources. It is not something you elect because bill-paying has become difficult.
  3. 3Work out which of the two services you need. Conservatorship reaches assets and property; representative payee reaches the monthly income and nothing more.
  4. 4Ask what the department will and will not do with property. Buying or selling real estate is named as within scope, which is unusually broad for a public fiduciary.
  5. 5Ask for the fee in writing. None is published, and a fiduciary service that costs nothing and one that takes a percentage are very different propositions.
  6. 6Raise it early if the veteran is entering long-term care. The same division runs the state veterans homes, so the two conversations belong together.
  7. 7A county veteran service officer can make the referral and will know the current contact.
