What this benefit is

The disabled veteran plate carries a one-time $15 permanent registration. On top of that, the fee chapter lists disabled veteran and ex-prisoner-of-war plates among the vehicle types exempt from county registration fees — and two counties charge $30 per year of registration each.

What it's worth: $15 once for permanent registration, and no county registration fee

  • The $30 shown is the annual county registration fee charged in the two counties named in the fee chapter; a veteran living outside them saves nothing on this line, so it is illustrative rather than a promise.
  • The disabled veteran registration is listed in the fee chapter at $15, permanent — not annual.
  • Ex-prisoner-of-war plates carry the same county fee exemption.
  • Eligibility for the plate itself is a veteran with a service-connected disability qualifying them as a disabled veteran under ORS 805.100.
  • Full-sized disabled veteran plates use the standard tree background, which carries no background surcharge; the motorcycle and moped versions are treated separately.

Who is entitled to it

  • The plate is issued on your own service-connected disability.
  • Your discharge is within range for the veteran plates.
  • Your home is in this state.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply for the disabled veteran plate through the motor vehicle agency; the veterans department and the transport department run the plate programme jointly.
  2. 2Check your county before valuing this. Two counties charge $30 per year of registration in local fees, and those are the ones where the exemption is worth real money.
  3. 3Ask for the fee line to be zeroed if a renewal notice shows a county fee. Disabled veteran plates appear on the exempt list in the agency’s own fee chapter.
  4. 4Note that the registration itself is permanent at $15 rather than a recurring charge, so a renewal notice showing a registration fee is worth querying.
  5. 5A former prisoner of war has the same county fee exemption on their own plate.

Your county may differThis benefit is worth nothing in most of the state and $30 a year in two counties, because only those two levy a county registration fee at that rate. It is one of the few vehicle benefits whose value depends entirely on where you live.
Worth knowingThe permanent $15 registration is easy to miss. It is charged once, not annually, so a veteran who has been paying a yearly registration alongside these plates should ask what the charge was for.
Known gapORS 805.100 sets the disabled veteran definition and could not be read this session — the legislature’s site refused every connection. The veterans department states the section number; the qualifying rating or award is not reproduced on either page read.
