What this benefit is

The motor vehicle service places a voluntary veteran designation on a driver licence or identification card at no additional fee, on proof of service produced at the time the card is issued.

What it's worth: Veteran designation added at no additional fee

  • The veterans department states the motor vehicle service offers a veteran designation that can be voluntarily placed on driver licences or identification cards.
  • It states the motor vehicle service will not charge an additional fee for the designation.
  • Proof of military service — a DD Form 214 or DD Form 215 — must be provided at the time the card is issued.
  • All other requirements for the driving privilege or identification card still apply, including the original, renewal or replacement fee.

Who is entitled to it

  • The designation goes on the veteran’s own card.
  • You served in the armed forces.
  • Your home is in Oregon.

How to claim it

Deadline: At the time a card is issued, renewed or replaced
  1. 1Time it with a renewal or a replacement. The designation itself carries no additional fee, but the card transaction does, so pairing them costs nothing extra.
  2. 2Bring the DD Form 214 or DD Form 215. The proof has to be produced at the time the card is issued, not sent afterwards.
  3. 3Understand what it is for: confirming veteran status for non-official purposes such as retail discounts. It is not a substitute for a discharge document.
  4. 4Ask what happens at the next renewal so the designation is not dropped when the card is reissued.
  5. 5If your discharge document is missing, request it from the national archives before booking the appointment.

Why only one source type: The veterans department describes the motor vehicle service’s designation on its own page. The statute host refused every connection this session, so no ORS section was opened.
