What this benefit is

Where an Armed Forces or National Guard member was killed in action during a wartime period, or died as a result of a service-connected disability incurred while serving during a wartime period, their family receives a tuition waiver at Kentucky state-supported institutions with NO AGE LIMIT AND NO TIME LIMIT. It covers undergraduate AND graduate degrees. The member's home of record on entry must have been Kentucky.

What it's worth: Tuition waived with no age limit and no time limit, undergraduate or graduate

  • There is NO AGE LIMIT and NO TIME LIMIT. That is exceptional — nearly every comparable waiver in this corpus has one or both.
  • It covers UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE degrees. Most waivers stop at undergraduate.
  • It applies where the member was killed in action during a wartime period, OR died as a result of a service-connected disability incurred while serving during a wartime period.
  • National Guard members are covered as well as Armed Forces members.
  • The member's HOME OF RECORD on entry into the Armed Forces must have been Kentucky.
  • Because there is no clock, a spouse or child who did not use it years ago has not lost it.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are the member's spouse or child.
  • The member was killed in action, or died of a service-connected disability from wartime service.
  • You are in Kentucky.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply through the KDVA Tuition Waiver Coordinator, however long ago the death was. There is no time limit.
  2. 2Do not rule yourself out on age. There is no age limit either.
  3. 3It covers graduate study, so a spouse returning for a master's is inside it.
  4. 4Check the member's HOME OF RECORD on entry into the Armed Forces — that is the Kentucky connection the waiver tests, not where you live now.
  5. 5National Guard deaths in wartime service are covered on the same footing.
