Tuition Waived for the Family of a Totally Disabled Veteran, POW or MIA

No matriculation or tuition fees at any Kentucky state-supported institution of higher education or state-supported vocational training school, for up to 45 months, for the spouse and children of a veteran rated permanently and totally disabled for pension purposes or 100% service-connected for compensation purposes. WARTIME SERVICE IS NOT REQUIRED on the 100% route. Permanently and totally disabled Kentucky Guard members are covered too.

What this benefit is

No matriculation or tuition fees at any Kentucky state-supported institution of higher education or state-supported vocational training school, for up to 45 months, for the spouse and children of a veteran rated permanently and totally disabled for pension purposes or 100% service-connected for compensation purposes. WARTIME SERVICE IS NOT REQUIRED on the 100% route. Permanently and totally disabled Kentucky Guard members are covered too.

What it's worth: No matriculation or tuition fees, up to 45 months

  • It covers matriculation AND tuition fees at any state-supported institution of higher education, and at state-supported VOCATIONAL TRAINING schools. A trade qualification is covered as well as a degree.
  • The limit is 45 months, or the shorter certificate period where the course is shorter.
  • WARTIME SERVICE IS NOT REQUIRED on the 100% compensation route. That is what separates this waiver from the survivor one.
  • Two rating routes: permanently and totally disabled for PENSION purposes, or 100% service-connected for COMPENSATION purposes. They are different findings and either will do.
  • Permanently and totally disabled Kentucky Guard members under KRS chapter 342 are covered.
  • Prisoner of war and missing in action status also qualify.
  • Applications go through the state veterans department's Tuition Waiver Coordinator as well as the institution.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are the veteran's spouse or child.
  • The veteran is rated permanently and totally disabled.
  • You are in Kentucky.

How to claim it

Deadline: At enrolment
  1. 1Apply through the Kentucky Department of Veterans' Affairs Tuition Waiver Coordinator, and tell the institution as well.
  2. 2If the veteran's rating is a PENSION permanent-and-total finding rather than a 100% compensation rating, that qualifies too — they are different findings and either works.
  3. 3Do not be turned away for lack of wartime service. The 100% route does not require it.
  4. 4Vocational training schools are covered. If you want a trade rather than a degree, this still applies.
  5. 5Budget the 45 months, or the certificate period if shorter.
  6. 6Check the other two Kentucky waivers as well — the survivor one has no time limit at all.
