  • The value is the full-service premium, removed. The department publishes no figure for it and the gap differs from station to station, so we carry none.
  • It only bites where a station actually offers both full-service and self-service. Most do not, and where only self-service is offered there is nothing for the provision to do.
  • The saving is small each time and repeats at every fill, which is what makes it worth knowing about rather than worth chasing.

How to claim it

  1. 1Get the Disabled Veteran licence plate first. The provision is written around the plate being displayed on the vehicle you are driving, and nothing else stands in for it.
  2. 2Check whether the station offers both full-service and self-service before you ask. The duty only arises where both are on offer.
  3. 3Ask. The department’s wording is that an employee shall provide full-service at the self-service price "upon request" — it is not something an attendant will offer unprompted.
  4. 4Note the passenger condition. The provision applies where the veteran is not accompanied by a person capable of pumping fuel, which the department defines as someone 16 years or older and not disabled.
  5. 5If an attendant refuses, ask for the manager rather than arguing at the pump, and take the station name and time — this is a duty on the business, not a courtesy.
  6. 6Do not confuse this with the parking provision. A properly displayed Disabled Veteran plate also authorises parking in spaces designated for persons with disabilities, with no additional permit required, and that is a separate entitlement.

CorrectionThe passenger test is the part that surprises people. The duty falls away where someone 16 or over and not disabled is in the car with you — so a veteran travelling with an adult companion is outside it, however hard pumping fuel actually is for them.
Worth knowingIt is the plate that does the work, not the rating letter. The provision is written around a vehicle bearing Disabled Veteran licence plates, so it is worth getting the plate onto the car you actually drive.
Known gapThe Department of Veterans Service states the provision but its own list of code references does not name a section against it, and no official Georgia host served us the statutory text this session. Whether any penalty attaches to a refusal is therefore unknown, and is recorded as a candidate.
