How to claim it
- 1Check the service test carefully. A minimum of 90 continuous days of active duty is the baseline; a veteran who enlisted after 7 September 1980 or was commissioned after 16 October 1981 must have served a minimum of 24 continuous months, or the full period called. Active duty means full-time service other than active duty for training.
- 2Assemble twelve months of Alabama residency proof: a driving licence issued far enough back to cover the last 12 months, prior-year property tax records, prior-year state income tax records, or utility bills for the last continuous 12 months.
- 3Get the medical examination. It must show that the applicant does not need care the homes are not equipped to give, does not have behavioural traits dangerous to others, and does not have a mental illness diagnosis that outweighs their medical condition.
- 4Submit one package even if you want to be considered at more than one home — the receiving home shares it with the others you tick.
- 5Ask about the per diem timing before the move. The determination can take up to two weeks after admission, and the veteran carries the full daily rate if it is not approved.

CorrectionThe homes list "Free nursing home care" among the things they do not provide. Every resident is responsible for full payment of the comprehensive care rate, payable one month in advance, and failure to pay results in discharge. Free care is the federal exception, not the state rule.
CorrectionThe federal exception has two routes and both require a need for nursing home care: either the care is for a VA-adjudicated service-connected disability, or the veteran has a service-connected rating of 70 percent or more, or a total rating based on individual unemployability.
Worth knowingBed-hold cover is conditional on the building being full. Residents get 10 days per occurrence for hospitalisation and 12 days a year of therapeutic leave with the per diem paid and no bed-hold charge — but only while the facility is at 90 percent occupancy. Below that, bed-hold charges fall on the veteran.
