Operation Recognition — the High School Diploma Your Service Interrupted

A veteran whose entry into service interrupted high school and prevented graduation may be awarded a standard high school diploma by the State Superintendent of Education. It covers service between 7 December 1941 and 1 January 1946, between 27 June 1950 and 31 January 1955, and between 15 November 1961 and 28 March 1973, for a veteran who was an Alabama resident before entering the armed forces. A family member may apply on the veteran's behalf.

  • The veteran must have been an Alabama resident before entering the armed forces.
  • Family members may apply on the veteran's behalf, which matters because much of this cohort will not apply for themselves.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply through the former high school principal or the County Superintendent of Education — not through the veterans department.
  2. 2Check your service dates against the three qualifying periods before applying: 7 December 1941 to 1 January 1946, 27 June 1950 to 31 January 1955, or 15 November 1961 to 28 March 1973.
  3. 3Take the DD Form 214 and whatever record of school attendance still exists. The school may hold more than the family does.
  4. 4A family member may apply on the veteran's behalf. If the veteran is unwilling or unable to do it themselves, that route is open and expressly allowed.
