The Honored Veteran Parking Placard — for Valor and POW Plate Holders

A veteran who holds, or could hold, one of the valor, prisoner of war or Legion of Valor distinctive plates may obtain an Honored Veteran parking permit, authorising parking in designated veteran parking spaces. It turns on the plate category rather than on a disability, so it is not the disabled parking placard and does not do that placard's job.

What this benefit is

A veteran who holds, or could hold, one of the valor, prisoner of war or Legion of Valor distinctive plates may obtain an Honored Veteran parking permit, authorising parking in designated veteran parking spaces. It turns on the plate category rather than on a disability, so it is not the disabled parking placard and does not do that placard's job.

What it's worth: A placard authorising parking in designated veteran parking spaces

  • The gate is holding, or being entitled to hold, one of the valor, prisoner of war or Legion of Valor distinctive plates — the decoration, not a disability rating.
  • This is NOT the disabled parking placard and does not authorise parking in disabled bays. It is for spaces designated for veterans.
  • It is obtained through the county veterans service office rather than through the licensing office that issues the plate.
  • Survivor eligibility is not established from the sources reviewed.

Who is entitled to it

  • You served in the U.S. armed forces.
  • You hold, or could hold, one of the valor or prisoner of war plates.
  • Your home is in Alabama.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply through your county veterans service office. It is not issued by the same counter that issues the licence plate.
  2. 2Take proof of the decoration or prisoner of war status that qualifies you for one of the valor plates.
  3. 3You do not need to hold the plate already — being entitled to one is the test.
  4. 4If you need to park in disabled bays, that is a different placard with a different test. Ask about both.

Known gapThe state veterans department's compilation prints the section number as 35-6-253.1, which is almost certainly a typo for 32-6-253.1 — Title 32 is the motor vehicle title. No section number is asserted in this record until it can be verified against the Code.

Sources

Why only one source type: The permit is issued by county veterans service offices under the state veterans department's own programme, and there is no separate statewide operating page. The department's compilation is both the authority and the description.
