How to claim it

  1. 1Use the department’s county map rather than assuming there is an office in your county — the department says there is not one everywhere, and some offices cover two counties.
  2. 2Ask for the specific service you need by name. The published list is long and includes things people pay for elsewhere: aid and attendance applications, discharge upgrades, and certification of claim documents.
  3. 3Bring the discharge document. If you do not have it, ask the office to request your service records — that is on the published list too.
  4. 4Ask about a discharge upgrade if bad paper has kept you out of benefits. The offices do that work.
  5. 5Ask them to handle the special veteran plate application while you are there. It is on their list and saves a separate trip to a licensing office.
  6. 6If the office cannot help, go up to the district manager — the department publishes a named manager for each of the four districts.
  7. 7A survivor can come in their own right for death benefits; the department names survivors alongside veterans and dependants.
