What this benefit is
A wartime veteran disabled 25 percent or more, running a business through their own efforts with no more than one helper, has state, county and municipal business licence taxes reduced by up to $25 each.
What it's worth: Up to $25 off the state, county and municipal licence tax each
- The statute reduces the licence tax by all of it, or by such portion as does not exceed $25 — so the saving is the lesser of the tax and $25, at each of the three levels.
- The upper end of the range assumes all three levels are payable. Many small operators pay only one or two.
- The income and property ceilings in §40-12-352 disqualify most modern applicants outright, which is why the weighting here is deliberately small.
Who is entitled to it
- You served in the U.S. armed forces.
- You run a business or occupation of your own.
- You are disabled to the extent of 25 percent or more.
- You can produce an honorable discharge or other proof of honorable termination of service.
- Your home is in Alabama.

How to claim it
Deadline: Licences expire 30 September and must be renewed by 31 October- 1Prove the disability with one of the four routes the statute names: a federal government rated disability certificate at 25 percent or more, an affidavit from a VA examining physician, a pension certificate from the federal government or the state, or a certificate from the county health officer — or, where there is none, an attested certificate from a reputable physician in your county.
- 2Prove permanent residence in the state, and apply in the county where you are a bona fide resident. The licence cannot be issued in any other county.
- 3Keep the business inside the limit: your own personal efforts, with not more than one employee, helper or apprentice. Anyone who assists counts, paid or unpaid.
- 4If you want to trade in a second county, take the licence issued in your home county to that county's probate judge. If the two together stay inside the $25 exemption, the second is countersigned without charge.
- 5Do not transfer or assign the licence. Transferring it forfeits every exemption under the division.
- 6Check §40-12-352 before you count on any of it: a veteran whose property, real and personal, is worth $5,000 or more, or whose net annual income is $2,500 or more, is excluded.

Sources
Why only one source type: Read from the Alabama Department of Revenue's own Handbook of Privilege and Store Licenses, which reproduces the division section by section. The handbook is both the statute text and the administering department's publication, so a separate operating source would be the same document.
