Preventive Care Guide

Preventive Care Schedule

Complete guide to VA preventive care services, screening schedules, and maintaining your health through regular check-ups.

Understanding VA Preventive Care

VA preventive care services are designed to help you maintain good health and catch potential health problems early when they're most treatable. These services are part of the comprehensive Medical Benefits Package and include immunizations, periodic health exams, routine vision testing, and health education programs. Best of all, you won't pay any copays for preventive tests and services like health screenings or immunizations.

Core Preventive Services

VA provides a comprehensive range of preventive care services based on evidence-based guidelines and your individual risk factors. Your primary care provider will work with you to determine which services you need and when you should receive them.

Scheduling Your Preventive Care

Your primary care provider will help you stay on track with your preventive care schedule. During your annual wellness visit, they'll review what screenings you need and help you schedule appropriate follow-up appointments.

How to Stay on Track:

  1. Schedule Annual Wellness Visits: Make your yearly appointment a priority
  2. Keep a Health Calendar: Track when you're due for screenings
  3. Use My HealtheVet: Access your health records and screening reminders
  4. Ask Questions: Discuss any concerns with your provider
  5. Follow Through: Complete recommended screenings promptly
  6. Review Results: Understand your test results and next steps

Remember:

Preventive care is most effective when it's consistent and ongoing. Don't wait until you feel sick to see your provider – regular check-ups and screenings can help prevent serious health problems or catch them early when treatment is most effective.
