Understanding VA Healthcare Eligibility

To be eligible for VA health care benefits, you must have served in the active military, naval, or air service and been separated under any condition other than dishonorable. Current and former members of the Reserves or National Guard who were called to active duty by a Federal Order (other than for training only) and completed the full period may also qualify.

Service Requirements

Most Veterans who enlisted after September 7, 1980, or entered active duty after October 16, 1981, must have served 24 continuous months or the full period for which they were called to active duty. Exceptions exist for those discharged due to a service-connected disability, hardship, or "early out."

VA Priority Groups Explained

After applying and enrolling, Veterans are assigned to one of eight Priority Groups (PGs), with PG 1 being the highest priority. This assignment determines how much, if anything, a Veteran will pay for care. If a Veteran qualifies for more than one group, they are placed in the highest one.

Priority Group 1

Veterans with service-connected disabilities rated 50% or more disabling, those determined unemployable due to service-connected conditions, or Medal of Honor recipients.

Priority Group 2

Veterans with service-connected disabilities rated 30% or 40% disabling.

Priority Group 3

Former Prisoners of War (POWs), Purple Heart recipients, Veterans discharged for a disability incurred or aggravated in the line of duty, or Veterans with service-connected disabilities rated 10% or 20% disabling.

Priority Group 4

Veterans receiving VA aid and attendance or housebound benefits, or those determined by VA to be catastrophically disabled.
