Why Ratings Don't Add Up Like Normal Math

VA combines ratings using a whole-person method so totals don't exceed 100%. Each additional condition applies to the remaining 'healthy' percentage, so 50% + 30% doesn't simply equal 80%.

See a quick example →

Example: If you have a 50% rating, the VA considers you 50% disabled and 50% healthy. A second 30% condition applies to the remaining 50% healthy portion: 50% × 0.30 = 15%. So the combined rating is 50% + 15% = 65%, not 80%.
