24 Feb TRICARE Extra and TRICARE Plus
TRICARE Extra is available to all TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries except active-duty service members. TRICARE Extra is essentially the same health care plan as TRICARE Standard, except it requires you to choose a doctor from a limited number of in-network providers. It is available to you whenever you visit an in-network provider, though you must be enrolled to be covered. It will also require significantly less paperwork than claims filed through TRICARE Standard.
Like TRICARE Standard, you will have an annual deductible to meet and will have copayments. However, TRICARE Extra will save you 5 percent on cost-sharing, meaning that active-duty family members will only pay 15 percent of costs, and retirees and their families will only pay 20 percent.
NOTE: This coverage is not available overseas.
TRICARE Plus allows TRICARE-eligible beneficiaries who are not enrolled in TRICARE Prime or a Medicare Advantage HMO to seek treatment at military treatment facilities that have decided to offer them. It provides cost-free coverage for primary care services. However, it does not cover specialist services at the MTF or referrals outside the MTF, nor does it transfer to any other military facility.
