VA Disability Compensation Guide

Complete guide to VA disability compensation - 2025 rates, eligibility requirements, and how to maximize your benefits for service-connected conditions.

What is VA Disability Compensation?

VA disability compensation is a tax-free monthly payment made to veterans who were injured or became ill due to their military service. The amount depends on your disability rating, which reflects how much your service-connected condition affects your ability to work and perform daily activities.

2025 Rate Increase

VA disability compensation rates increased by 2.5% effective December 1, 2024, due to the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA).

How Ratings Are Determined

Medical Examination

VA schedules a Compensation & Pension (C&P) exam to evaluate your condition and determine the severity of your disability.

Rating Schedule

VA uses the Schedule for Rating Disabilities to assign percentage ratings from 0% to 100% in 10% increments.

Combined Ratings

Multiple disabilities are combined using VA math, not simple addition. A 50% and 30% rating doesn't equal 80%.

Important Notes

  • • Ratings can be increased if your condition worsens
  • • You can file for additional conditions at any time
  • • Payments are retroactive to your claim filing date
  • • Consider supplemental disability insurance for additional protection
