What this benefit is
Every public department gives veterans and surviving spouses a preference before the interview stage. On scored applications the advantage is 5% — and 10% for a veteran with a service-connected disability of ten percent or more, one of the lowest disabled-tier gates anywhere.
Who is entitled to it
- You are a veteran — or a surviving spouse, whom the statute treats identically.
- You are applying in this state.
Not sure whether that describes you?
Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.
How to claim it
- 1Claim veteran or surviving-spouse status with the application — the preference attaches before the interview process in every public department.
- 2On a numerically scored application the advantage is 5% over any nonveteran — and 10% if your service-connected disability is ten percent or more. No high rating is needed for the doubled tier.
- 3Where the department uses no scoring, the statute still requires an advantage that "reasonably approximates" the scored one — the preference does not vanish with the scoresheet.
- 4Age or impairment that does not materially incapacitate cannot disqualify you, and disabled veterans are preferred over able-bodied veterans in terms.
