What this benefit is

A serving Guard member pays no in-state tuition and no mandatory fees at the state university, the community colleges or the law enforcement academy. At a private institution in the state the plan pays up to $1,500 for a full-time semester period instead. Three payments a year, and the total from every source cannot pass 100% of the bill.

What it's worth: 100% of in-state tuition and mandatory fees at the public institutions; up to $1,500 per full-time semester period at an approved private institution in the state

  • Mandatory fees are described as the base fees charged to every student. Optional fees, programme fees, lab fees and books are excluded.
  • The private-institution route applies only to in-state campuses approved for federal education benefits; enrolling online through an out-of-state main campus is not covered.
  • Payments are made three times a year, for the autumn, spring and summer semester periods.
  • Certificate and degree programmes generally qualify; workforce development programmes generally do not, because of accreditation limits.
  • The plan combined with federal tuition assistance, the post-9/11 benefit or the overseas combat veteran benefit cannot exceed 100% of tuition and fees.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are a serving member of the state National Guard.
  • You are in this state.

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Apply through the education service office before the term opens. The plan pays by semester period and a late application means a term paid from your own account.
  2. 2Separate mandatory fees from optional ones on your bill before you budget. The plan covers the base fees every student pays; a programme fee, a lab fee or a course-materials charge is yours.
  3. 3If you are looking at a private institution, check first that the campus you will attend is an in-state campus approved for federal education benefits. Enrolling online through a main campus in another state is expressly outside the plan.
  4. 4Do not stack blindly. The combined total from this plan, federal tuition assistance and any federal education benefit cannot exceed 100% of tuition and fees, so an over-claim comes back as a recovery.
  5. 5Use the summer semester period. Three payments a year is more than most state plans allow, and a member who only thinks in autumn and spring leaves a third of the entitlement unused.
  6. 6Ask the education service office in writing what service obligation attaches before you accept the first payment. The department's pages do not state one, and that is exactly the sort of term you want on paper.

CorrectionThe $1,500 figure is often quoted as the value of the whole plan. It is not. It is the ceiling on the private-institution route. At the public institutions the plan pays the whole in-state tuition and mandatory fee bill, which is a much larger number.
Worth knowingThe exclusion of workforce development programmes is the trap for a member who wants a trade credential rather than a degree. Check the programme against the plan before enrolling, not after.
Known gapThe department's pages do not publish a service obligation, a credit ceiling or what happens if membership ends mid-term. Those three answers decide whether an unfinished degree becomes a debt.
