Expedited Licence and Free Temporary Permits — Thirty Days, and Volunteer Hours Count

A licensing board must issue an expedited licence within thirty days to a service member or military spouse who has held a licence elsewhere for five years — with no application needed at all. Three years buys a free 90-day temporary licence while the file is reviewed, and a temporary practice permit can run three years. A board may charge nothing for either permit.

What this benefit is

A licensing board must issue an expedited licence within thirty days to a service member or military spouse who has held a licence elsewhere for five years — with no application needed at all. Three years buys a free 90-day temporary licence while the file is reviewed, and a temporary practice permit can run three years. A board may charge nothing for either permit.

What it's worth: Expedited licence in thirty days on five years of out-of-state licensure; free 90-day temporary licence on three years; free temporary practice permit up to three years

  • The five-year route can be triggered by a request without filing a completed application; the board still has thirty days.
  • The fee bar covers the temporary permit and the temporary licence. Required fees for the underlying licence itself are still payable.
  • The section reaches licences under Title 33 and W.S. 21-2-802, but not attorneys and not boards whose profession carries prescriptive drug authority.

Who is entitled to it

  • You served in the uniformed services, or are the spouse of someone who does.
  • Your release was characterised as honorable.
  • You are in this state.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Work out which of the two clocks you are on before you write to the board. Five consecutive years of a relevant, active out-of-state licence in good standing gets you an expedited licence within thirty days — and you can trigger it by request, without filing a completed application first. Three consecutive years gets you a free temporary licence for up to 90 days while your application is reviewed.
  2. 2Send the proof the section names: the out-of-state licence in good standing, a military identification card (yours or your spouse's) or a marriage licence, and either military orders for service here or evidence of an honorable characterisation on release.
  3. 3Ask for the temporary practice permit as well if the licence itself will take time. It runs up to three years while you make progress toward the unmet requirements, and the board may not charge you for it.
  4. 4A separated member has two years from release to use this section. After that the ordinary route applies, so file early.
  5. 5If you are the spouse, itemise ALL your relevant work experience — the section says full-time or part-time, paid or volunteer, may be credited toward a board's work experience requirement. Volunteer hours are the ones people leave off.
  6. 6Tick the military box on the application or renewal form. Boards are required to ask, and self-identifying with satisfactory proof obliges the board to start immediately and issue within thirty days.

CorrectionThis is usually summarised as "military spouse licensure by endorsement". It is considerably more. A member or spouse with five years of out-of-state licensure can get a licence within thirty days of a REQUEST, without filing a completed application — and a board may not charge for either of the two temporary routes that bridge the gap.
Worth knowingVolunteer experience counting toward a work experience requirement is written into the section for military spouses specifically. Spouses who moved every two or three years often have exactly that kind of history and discount it.
Worth knowingTwo exclusions to check before you plan around this: attorneys at law are outside it, and so is any board representing a profession with prescriptive drug authority. Emergency medical service licences go through the interstate compact route instead.
Worth knowingThe definition of a military service member reaches someone released within two years of applying whose service was characterised as honorable. It is a transition window, not a permanent veteran status.

Sources

Why only one source type: The section was read in full in the legislature's own compiled title, which carries the definitions, both qualifying periods, the fee bars and the exclusions. There is no single administering agency page to pair it with: the section binds every professional and occupational licensing board separately, and each publishes only its own rules.

This finder provides an informational match, not a government eligibility determination. The responsible agency decides your application.
