What this benefit is

A resident veteran receiving 50% or more service-connected disability compensation applies through the county treasurer for the distinctive disabled veteran plate — and one vehicle a year carries it exempt from the registration fees. A second plate for a motorcycle or multipurpose vehicle is allowed at the regular fees.

What it's worth: One pair of plates a year exempt from registration fees — passenger car, pickup, motorcycle or multipurpose vehicle

  • The exemption covers the registration fees of Wyo. Stat. §31-3-101(a) for one vehicle; a second plate is allowed but at the regular fees.

Who is entitled to it

  • You receive service-connected disability compensation at 50% or more.
  • You are a resident of this state.

How to claim it

Deadline: At least 30 days before the last day of your annual registration month
  1. 1Apply annually to the county treasurer — forms are at every county treasurer office — not less than 30 days before the last day of your registration month. Residency is checked at initial application and at renewal.
  2. 2The county treasurer issues one pair of plates a year exempt from the registration fees; the plate carries a distinctive symbol or letters identifying a disabled veteran, without the county numeral.
  3. 3One additional pair for a motorcycle or a multipurpose vehicle can be purchased at the regular fees.
  4. 4A veteran who qualifies may instead select any other military distinctive plate available under the chapter, paying the ordinary registration fees for it.

Worth knowingSummaries often say the plate itself is free. The statute is better: the vehicle carrying it is exempt from the registration fees under §31-3-101(a) — a recurring saving, not a one-time plate discount.

Sources

Why only one source type: The statute states the whole scheme in terms — the 50% compensation test, the annual county-treasurer application, the one-exempt-pair limit and the extra-plate option — and was read directly from the legislature's compiled title.
