Armed Forces, Purple Heart and Guard Plates — $20 to the Commission, and a Woman Veteran Decal
Wyo. - § 31-2-217(a): the county treasurer issues one set of special licence plates to each applicant for a passenger car, truck, motorcycle, handicapped motorcycle or motor home owned or leased by a survivor of Pearl Harbor, a member of the Wyoming army or air national guard, a purple heart recipient or an honorably discharged veteran of the United States armed forces, and, if applied for and eligible, one set of decals designating the person an honorably discharged woman veteran.

- § 31-2-217(c): the plates bear a distinctive symbol or letters identifying the registrant as a Pearl Harbor survivor, a national guard member, a purple heart recipient or a veteran, and "The armed forces license plate shall specify the branch of service in which the applicant served or is serving."
- § 31-2-217(e)(iv): an armed forces plate is applied for "by presenting documentation that he is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States armed forces"; (e)(v) covers the woman veteran decal, on documentation that she is female and an honorably discharged veteran.
- § 31-2-217(g): applications go directly to the county treasurer at least 30 days before the vehicle’s registration expires, and a decal application may be made at the same time.
- § 31-2-217(j): "Each applicant for an armed forces special license plate shall submit an application fee of twenty dollars ($20.00) upon which the Wyoming veteran's commission shall issue a written statement establishing the applicant's eligibility to receive an armed forces license plate from the county treasurer. Fees collected under this subsection shall be deposited into the veterans' commission expendable trust fund." Application and renewal are then subject to the article and to the fee required by W.S. 31-3-102(a)(viii), read this session as $30.
- § 31-2-217(m): each applicant for a woman veteran decal submits an administration fee in an amount determined by the department to be sufficient to recover reasonable administrative costs. No figure is set in the statute, so none is published here.
- § 31-2-217(f): vehicles registered under the section remain subject to all other provisions of the article except those relating to the type of number plates under W.S. 31-2-204.

How to claim it
Deadline: At least 30 days before your registration expires- 1Decide which of the four plates fits before you apply — Pearl Harbor survivor, national guard, purple heart, or armed forces. They are separate routes within one section.
- 2Ask for the branch to be named. Subsection (c) requires the armed forces plate to specify the branch in which the applicant served or is serving, so a plate that does not is wrong.
- 3Budget $20 for the commission on top of the plate fee if you are taking the armed forces plate. That fee buys the written eligibility statement the county treasurer needs, and it goes into the veterans’ commission expendable trust fund.
- 4Women veterans should ask for the decal at the same time. Subsection (g) allows the decal application to be made together with the plate application, and doing it later means a second trip.
- 5Expect a further administration fee for the decal. The statute sets no figure and directs the department to set one that recovers its reasonable administrative costs.
- 6Apply at least 30 days before your registration expires, and apply again each year — subsection (b) makes it an annual application to the county treasurer.
- 7Bring documentation of the honorable discharge. Subsection (e)(iv) asks for it directly, and the woman veteran decal under (e)(v) needs documentation of both the discharge and the applicant being female.
