What this benefit is

A veteran with a service-connected disability rated 30% or more can be appointed to a State of Wisconsin job without going through the competitive hiring process — provided the VA documentation is dated within the past twelve months.

What it's worth: Considered for state vacancies without competing through the traditional hiring process

  • This is access, not money. What it is worth depends entirely on whether a matching vacancy arises, and nothing here promises one will.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are the veteran.
  • You are rated at 30% or more.
  • Your discharge meets the standard.
  • Your home is in Wisconsin.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Create an account and apply online through Wisc.Jobs. There is no separate paper route published.
  2. 2Attach three things: a resume, the DD214 (Member-4 or Service-2 copy) showing an honorable discharge, and VA documentation confirming the service-connected disability rating.
  3. 3Check the date on the VA letter. The programme requires documentation from the VA or other federal military authority dated within the past twelve months — an older letter is the most avoidable rejection here.
  4. 4Confirm you are outside the disqualifier: an applicant must not hold a permanent state government position, or have mandatory restoration rights to one.
  5. 5Understand what happens next. Qualifications and experience are reviewed and matched to openings across state agencies, and hiring officials may consider you as vacancies arise — this is a standing candidacy, not an appointment.
  6. 6Keep applying competitively as well. Nothing in the programme stops you from being considered the ordinary way at the same time.
  7. 7If the portal defeats you, the Division of Personnel Management publishes a job aid for the programme and takes questions on 608-267-1012.

Periodic
The VA documentation must be dated within the past 12 months, so a long wait for a match means a fresh letter.
CorrectionThis is not a points-based preference bolted onto a competitive exam. It is a separate appointment authority that skips the competitive process — which is why the 30% threshold is hard rather than a sliding scale.
Worth knowingTwo doors lead in: being listed on a U.S. Armed Forces permanent disability list at 30% or more, or holding a compensable service-connected disability of at least 30% as determined by the VA. A veteran who fails one may still meet the other.
Known gapThe statutory basis is not named on the page and Wisconsin’s statute site is unreachable from here, so this record is tier B. Nor does WDVA publish how long a candidacy stays live, or whether a refused match ends it.
