What this benefit is

WDVA verifies your service and the DMV prints a Veteran identifier on your driver licence or state ID — and the eligibility rules reach a Reserve or Guard member who completed an initial term of obligated service without ever serving on active duty.

What it's worth: A Veteran identifier printed on your driver licence or state ID

  • WDVA publishes no fee waiver attached to the identifier, and no list of discounts it unlocks. Its value is that you stop carrying a DD214 to prove you served.

Who is entitled to it

  • You are the veteran.
  • You served and were discharged under honorable conditions.
  • Your home is in Wisconsin.

Not sure whether that describes you?

Answer a few questions about this benefit specifically — we only ask what this one actually depends on, and we stop as soon as we know.

How to claim it

  1. 1Call 1-800-WIS-VETS (947-8387), option 1, before doing anything else — WDVA may already hold enough to confirm eligibility, in which case there is nothing to apply for.
  2. 2If the system does not confirm it, apply through MyWisVets and upload a copy of the DD214 or DD215.
  3. 3If you never served on active duty beyond active duty for training, this is still open to you — WDVA accepts proof of satisfactory completion of an initial term of obligated service in the Reserves or National Guard under honorable conditions.
  4. 4Pick your proof from WDVA’s list for that route: an NGB-22 showing character of service, a retirement points statement with discharge orders or with a DD-256, a DD-214 with a DD-214-1 Reserve Component Addendum, an enlistment contract with a DD-256, a 20-year letter, a Certificate of Eligibility for VA Home Loans with proof of honorable discharge, or a DD-4836 with the same.
  5. 5Expect to be asked for the enlistment contract as well in some cases, because it is what shows how long the initial obligated term was.
  6. 6Wait for WDVA’s determination, then go to the DMV to have the card issued with the identifier — the DMV cannot make the eligibility decision for you.
  7. 7Note the two things that do not count on their own: active duty for training, and full-time National Guard duty.

At each renewal
The identifier is printed on the card, so it is reissued with the card.
CorrectionThe eligibility test here is wider than "served on active duty". Completing an initial term of obligated service in the Reserves or National Guard under honorable conditions is a route in its own right, and it is the one most former Reserve members assume is closed to them.
Worth knowingThere is also a route for service with a special guerrilla unit or irregular forces operating from a base in Laos in support of the U.S. military between 28 February 1961 and 18 September 1978.
Known gapWDVA publishes no fee for the identifier and no statutory citation, and the vehicle-licensing pages it links to sit on a transport department host that refuses connections from here. Confirm the card fee with the DMV before assuming it is free.
